Mumbai, July 14: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across India’s major metro cities on Tuesday, with fuel rates holding steady in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Chennai saw the biggest decline in both petrol and diesel prices, while Thiruvananthapuram experienced the biggest rise among state capitals. Fuel prices also rose marginally in Jaipur and Lucknow, even as most other cities witnessed no change. Retail fuel prices are revised daily based on state-specific taxes and levies.
Global oil prices climbed to their highest level in a month on Tuesday, extending the previous session’s sharp gains. Escalating military action between the US and Iran sparked fears of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.
Brent crude futures rose about 1.6% to around $84.7 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 1.8% to trade at $79.6 a barrel. To be sure, the rally came after Monday’s surge, and signified the strongest back-to-back gains in oil prices since May 2020.
Sentiment worsened after the US escalated strikes on Iranian targets and put back its naval blockade on Iranian shipping. In response, Iran reportedly threw missiles on two UAE oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump also proposed imposing a 20% fee on cargo transiting the strategic waterway, adding to uncertainty in energy markets.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of global oil consumption, making any disruption to shipping through the route a major concern for energy markets. Analysts said heightened geopolitical risks and the possibility of supply interruptions could keep crude prices elevated in the near term if tensions continue to escalate.
Petrol Prices
Petrol prices remained unchanged across most major Indian cities on Tuesday, with rates in New Delhi steady at Rs 102.12 per litre, Mumbai at Rs 111.21, and Kolkata at Rs 113.51. Gurgaon, Noida, Chandigarh and Patna also saw no change in retail fuel prices.
