Mumbai, September 2: Petrol prices vary significantly across major Indian cities, with Hyderabad recording the highest rate among the cities listed at ₹115.72 per litre, while Thiruvananthapuram has the highest diesel price at ₹104.40 per litre. In Delhi, petrol is priced at ₹102.12 per litre and diesel at ₹95.20 per litre.
Fuel prices differ from state to state primarily because of variations in taxes and local levies. Among the other major cities, petrol costs ₹111.21 per litre in Mumbai, ₹113.51 in Kolkata, ₹107.76 in Chennai and ₹111.68 in Bengaluru.
For diesel, prices range from ₹89.47 per litre in Chandigarh to ₹104.40 in Thiruvananthapuram. Diesel is priced at ₹97.83 per litre in Mumbai, ₹99.82 in Kolkata, ₹99.55 in Chennai and ₹99.56 in Bengaluru.
Oil prices climbed on Wednesday after fresh strikes by the United States on Iran intensified concerns over disruptions to global crude supplies, with investors closely watching the conflict for signs of further escalation.
Brent crude rose 0.8% to $95.4 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.5% to $90.66 a barrel.
The latest gains came after oil prices surged in the previous session, when Brent touched a five-week high, as the conflict between Washington and Tehran raised the risk of disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil supplies.
The escalation has brought the prospect of a sustained supply shock back into focus. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway could have a significant impact on crude availability and push prices substantially higher, particularly given its importance to Middle Eastern oil exports.
Markets are also assessing the inflationary consequences of the rise in energy prices. Higher crude could lift fuel and transportation costs globally, complicating the outlook for central banks that have been weighing the scope and timing of further interest-rate moves.
For major oil-importing economies such as India, a prolonged rise in crude prices could add pressure on inflation, the rupee and the country’s import bill. Indian equities could also remain sensitive to oil-price movements, with energy producers potentially benefiting while oil-consuming sectors face margin pressure.
Investors will now closely track developments in the U.S.-Iran conflict and any signs of disruption to crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz, with further escalation likely to keep oil prices and broader financial markets volatile.
