Mumbai, September 3: Petrol and diesel prices vary across cities in India, with rates determined by factors including state taxes and local levies. Petrol is priced at ₹102.12 per litre in New Delhi, while diesel costs ₹95.20 per litre.
Oil prices edged lower on Thursday as investors weighed the risk of further military escalation between the United States and Iran against tentative signs that the latest flare-up in the conflict could be easing.
Brent crude futures fell 0.13% to $95.5 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude edged up 0.04% to $91.05 a barrel. Both benchmarks had swung sharply in the previous session, moving within a roughly $3 range as traders assessed developments in the Middle East.
The latest exchange of fire between Washington and Tehran has raised fresh concerns about crude supplies from the Middle East. The conflict is now in its seventh month, while the latest attacks represented the most substantial exchange of fire between the two sides since July.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil supplies, has also come under pressure. Preliminary Kpler data showed that only four commodity vessels crossed the waterway on Wednesday, compared with a 10-day average of around 13 vessels. Iran has also expanded its list of vessels it considers non-compliant and could subject to fines, confiscation or detention.
The United States, meanwhile, said 17 million barrels of crude passed through the strait on Monday, the highest volume since the conflict began disrupting flows. The conflicting signals have left markets particularly sensitive to any further developments around the key shipping corridor.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington’s renewed campaign against Iran would not continue for “too long”, while confirming that U.S. forces had targeted Iranian radar and missile systems near the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices eased after there were no confirmed fresh exchanges of fire by Wednesday midday Sydney time, prompting hopes that the latest escalation may be contained. However, analysts cautioned that the situation remains highly uncertain and any renewed attacks could quickly push crude prices higher.
For India, the world’s third-largest crude oil importer and consumer, sustained prices around $95 a barrel remain a significant risk. Higher crude costs can increase the country’s import bill, put pressure on the rupee and complicate the inflation outlook.
Indian equities have already been under pressure from the surge in oil prices and rising global bond yields. The Nifty 50 fell 0.59% to 23,914.45 on Wednesday, while the Sensex declined 0.49% to 76,570.35.
With oil still close to multi-month highs, investors are likely to closely track developments around the Strait of Hormuz. Any sustained easing in tensions could provide relief to crude-sensitive markets, while further disruption to shipments could add pressure on Indian equities, the rupee and inflation expectations.
