Mumbai, August 31: Fuel prices remained different across major Indian cities, with Hyderabad recording the highest petrol and diesel rates among the cities covered, at Rs 115.72 per litre and Rs 103.83 per litre, respectively. In contrast, New Delhi and Noida continued to record comparatively lower fuel prices, with petrol at Rs 102.12 and Rs 101.88 per litre, respectively, and diesel at Rs 95.20 and Rs 95.36 per litre.
Oil prices climbed more than 2% on Monday after U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering retaliation from Tehran and raising concerns over a fresh escalation in the six-month-long Middle East conflict. Brent crude futures rose 2.3% to $90.15 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 2% to $85 a barrel.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the country had attacked two U.S. air bases in Jordan in retaliation for the strike on Larak Island. The latest escalation has heightened concerns about the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil chokepoint through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil flowed before the war began in February.
Oil markets were already closely watching efforts to reopen the Strait, with negotiations to end the conflict at an impasse. Shipping activity through the waterway has also fallen, with only five visible commodity vessels a day sailing through the strait over the weekend, while a tanker was reportedly hit by a projectile on Saturday. Any further disruption to tanker traffic could increase concerns over global crude supplies and provide further support to oil prices.
Analysts said a further escalation could push crude higher. WTI would open the way for additional gains if it breaks above the $85.80-$85.90 a barrel resistance zone, with the next levels seen around last week’s $87.69 high and July’s $93.50 peak. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington was likely to impose new secondary sanctions on Iran every week, adding another layer of uncertainty for the country’s oil exports.
Despite Monday’s gains, Brent and WTI remained on track for modest monthly declines after falling more than 4% last week. U.S. President Donald Trump also said oil from a recent deal with Venezuela would be used to replenish the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which is close to its lowest level in 44 years.
For India, higher crude prices remain a key concern because the country is heavily dependent on imported oil. A sustained rise in Brent could increase the import bill, put pressure on the rupee and add to inflationary risks, while also affecting the margins of fuel-consuming sectors. Oil producers such as ONGC and Oil India, however, could benefit if elevated crude prices persist.
Here is a look at the latest petrol and diesel prices across Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi and Noida.
Petrol Prices

Petrol prices remained varied across major Indian cities, with Ahmedabad recording a rate of Rs 102.15 per litre, while motorists in Hyderabad faced the highest price among the cities listed at Rs 115.72 per litre.
In Kolkata, petrol was priced at Rs 113.51 per litre, keeping the eastern metro significantly more expensive than northern cities. Meanwhile, Lucknow saw petrol retail at Rs 102.31 per litre.
In the Delhi-NCR region, petrol prices were relatively lower. New Delhi recorded a rate of Rs 102.12 per litre, while Noida was slightly cheaper at Rs 101.88 per litre.
The difference in petrol prices across cities is largely influenced by state-level taxes, including VAT, and local levies, even though the underlying fuel prices are broadly linked to international crude oil prices and domestic pricing factors.
Diesel Prices

Diesel prices continued to vary across major Indian cities, with Hyderabad recording the highest rate among the cities listed at Rs 103.83 per litre. Ahmedabad followed, with diesel priced at Rs 98.27 per litre.
In Kolkata, diesel was retailing at Rs 99.82 per litre, while motorists in Lucknow paid Rs 95.79 per litre, highlighting the variation in fuel prices across states.
Within the Delhi-NCR region, diesel prices remained comparatively lower. New Delhi recorded a rate of Rs 95.20 per litre, while Noida was marginally higher at Rs 95.36 per litre.
The variation in diesel prices between cities is primarily driven by differences in state taxes and local levies, alongside the underlying cost of fuel. Changes in international crude oil prices and currency movements can also influence domestic fuel-market conditions.
