Mumbai, September 4: Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities on Friday, with fuel rates continuing to vary significantly from one state to another due to differences in local taxes and other charges. Petrol was priced at ₹102.12 a litre in New Delhi, while Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru had rates above ₹111. Hyderabad recorded the highest petrol price among the cities listed at ₹115.73 a litre. For diesel, New Delhi’s rate stood at ₹95.20 a litre, while Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest prices at ₹103.82 and ₹104.40, respectively.
Oil prices were on track for their biggest weekly gain since mid-July on Friday as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran raised concerns over potential disruptions to crude supplies from the Middle East. Brent crude was up about 7% for the week, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate was headed for a nearly 10% weekly gain.
Brent crude rose 0.4% to $95.9 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate was up 0.7% at $91.9 a barrel. Prices have climbed sharply this week after renewed hostilities between Washington and Tehran intensified fears that the conflict could disrupt oil production and shipping routes in the region.
The conflict has heightened concerns over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies. Crossings fell below average earlier this week, while Iran expanded its blacklisting of vessels that it said were not complying with its restrictions, adding to uncertainty over the movement of crude and other commodities.
The latest escalation followed deadly U.S. attacks involving Iranian civilians, while Israel’s defence minister warned of severe retaliation against Iran. U.S. Vice President JD Vance also ruled out diplomacy unless Tehran stops attacks on commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The surge in crude prices is particularly significant for India, one of the world’s major oil importers. A sustained rise in international oil prices could widen the country’s trade deficit, put pressure on the rupee and raise input costs for oil-dependent sectors.
Higher crude prices could also complicate India’s inflation outlook by increasing transportation and production costs, potentially limiting the scope for monetary easing.
For Indian equities, the oil rally is therefore a key headwind despite supportive global equity cues. Oil marketing companies, airlines, paints, chemicals and logistics firms could remain sensitive to sustained high crude prices, while upstream producers may benefit from stronger realizations.
Markets are likely to remain focused on developments around the U.S.-Iran conflict and the potential impact on Middle Eastern supply routes. Any further disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could provide another leg higher for crude prices, while signs of de-escalation could ease the geopolitical premium.
For now, oil remains firmly in focus, with Brent on course for its strongest weekly performance in nearly two months.
