Mumbai, October 13: Petrol and diesel prices today, October 13, remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities, with Hyderabad recording an increase in both fuel rates and Lucknow witnessing declines. Petrol prices stood at Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi, Rs 111.21 in Mumbai and Rs 113.51 in Kolkata, while diesel was priced at Rs 95.20, Rs 97.83 and Rs 99.82 per litre, respectively. Hyderabad had among the highest fuel prices, with petrol at Rs 116.15 and diesel at Rs 104.23 per litre. Meanwhile, petrol in Chennai fell marginally to Rs 107.76 per litre, and diesel prices in Lucknow declined to Rs 95.36.
Crude oil prices declined on Tuesday, retreating from a near one-month high in the previous session, as prospects of additional Russian diesel supplies offered some relief to fuel markets even as escalating tensions in the Middle East kept supply disruption risks elevated.
Brent crude futures fell 1% to $105.6 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped the same to $92.8 a barrel. Both benchmarks had climbed nearly $2 a barrel on Monday, with Brent settling at its highest level since September 15.
US President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets, while his administration temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian fuel. The potential increase in supplies could ease tightness in global fuel markets and temper some of the price pressures stemming from recent supply concerns. However, uncertainty persists over the proposed Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire, with reports of continued attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure casting doubt on the prospects of a lasting agreement.
Meanwhile, risks to energy infrastructure and shipping routes in the Gulf continued to support prices. Attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces on Riyadh’s international airport over the weekend, alongside reported tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz, renewed concerns about disruptions along a crucial global oil transit route. The developments threaten to reverse the recovery in Middle Eastern supplies recorded in September.
Higher freight and insurance costs are adding to the strain on global energy markets. OPEC said shipping and insurance expenses had climbed to more than one-third of commodity value, complicating the movement of crude oil and refined products. The organisation also lowered its forecast for global oil demand growth this year to 400,000 barrels per day, from 1.4 million bpd projected at the start of the year.
For India, a major crude oil importer, prices above $100 a barrel remain a concern, with sustained increases potentially widening the import bill, pressuring the rupee and adding to domestic inflation. Although the prospect of additional Russian fuel supplies has offered some near-term relief, persistent geopolitical risks could keep crude prices volatile.
