Mumbai, October 9: Petrol and diesel prices today, October 9, remained unchanged in most major Indian cities, with a few locations recording marginal revisions. Petrol was priced at Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi and Rs 111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel rates stood at Rs 95.20 and Rs 97.83 per litre, respectively. Among the listed cities, Hyderabad recorded petrol at Rs 116.15 per litre, while Thiruvananthapuram had the highest diesel price at Rs 104.40 per litre.
Crude oil prices declined on Friday, October 9, as easing concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East followed US President Donald Trump’s comments on diplomatic efforts to end the conflict with Iran. Brent crude futures fell 1% to $103.2 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 0.9% to $90.6 per barrel. However, Brent remained on track for a weekly gain after a sharp rally in the previous session.
Oil prices came under pressure after Trump said Washington was holding productive discussions with Iran and would not launch an attack before the November 3 US midterm elections. The comments offered some relief to markets amid concerns that an escalation in the conflict could disrupt crude shipments from the Middle East. Iran is also reviewing a US response to a proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Before the conflict, the critical shipping route handled about 20% of global oil and fuel shipments.
Despite the easing in prices, supply risks persisted. The US imposed fresh sanctions on Thursday targeting individuals, networks and 17 vessels accused of transporting Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals. Meanwhile, Hurricane Isaias approaching the Gulf of Mexico has forced producers to shut in around 1.3 million barrels per day of oil production, equivalent to 62.9% of the region’s output, according to US government data. These disruptions have kept the global oil market volatile.
Brent crude remained on course to record a weekly increase after settling more than 4% higher on Thursday, supported by concerns over attacks on oil shipments from the Middle East earlier in the week. WTI, meanwhile, was headed for a slight weekly decline. For India, which relies heavily on imported crude, any sustained moderation in oil prices could ease pressure on the import bill, inflation and the rupee. However, prices remain elevated, leaving energy costs and geopolitical developments firmly in focus for investors.
