Mumbai, September 22: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on Tuesday, September 22, with Patna being the only city among those listed to record a decline in both fuel rates. Petrol prices stood at 102.12 per litre in Delhi and 111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel was priced at 95.20 in Delhi and 97.83 in Mumbai. In Patna, petrol prices fell by 1.18 per litre and diesel rates declined by 1.13.

Oil prices edged higher on Tuesday after falling sharply in the previous session, with investors awaiting potential diplomatic developments between the US and Iran at the United Nations General Assembly this week. Brent crude futures rose 1% to $101.4 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 0.8% to $93.12 a barrel.

The modest rebound came after Brent prices fell more than 3% in the previous session, with analysts describing the move as a short-covering bounce rather than a fundamental shift in the oil market.

Market attention remained focused on the possibility of talks between US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to be in New York for the UN General Assembly. Trump has said he would be open to meeting Pezeshkian, while Iran has conveyed conditions for returning to negotiations, adding to expectations that diplomatic headlines could continue to drive crude prices.

However, geopolitical risks remained elevated, with Iran-backed Houthi forces stepping up attacks in the region. Saudi Arabia has increased crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz after attacks disrupted some shipments, while China has privately urged Tehran to help curb Houthi attacks, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Oil markets are therefore expected to remain highly sensitive to developments around US-Iran diplomacy, with traders weighing the possibility of improved supply conditions against continuing disruptions and geopolitical risks. For India, elevated crude prices remain a key market trigger given the country’s dependence on imported oil, with movements in global prices having implications for inflation, the trade balance and corporate costs.
