Mumbai, 7 January͏ ͏2026͏: The Indian rupee strengthened by 26 paisa to 89.92 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, supported by a softer US dollar and a sharp decline in global crude oil prices. The appreciation came on the back of a slight recovery in the previous session, when the rupee closed at 90.18 after falling for four consecutive days. 

The rupee opened at 90.20 on the interbank foreign exchange and moved higher during the early trading session, aided by external market cues and balanced flows in the spot market. 

͏Rupee Moves to 89.92͏ as Dollar Index Slips 0.05%͏ ͏an͏d Brent Falls ͏1.05% 

The US dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.05% at 98.52 in the early hours. At the same time, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 1.05% to USD 60.06 per barrel in futures trading. These changes reduced pressure on the local currency, allowing the rupee to rise from its opening level of 90.20 to 89.92 in early trade. 

Exporter Sell a͏t͏ Highs, Importers Buy Near ͏90 in Spot Market 

According to market participants, exporters contin͏ued selling dollars at higher intraday levels on a cash and spot basis, while importers absorbed supply on declines close to the 90-mark for the dollar. The rupee opened stronger despite continued tariff-related news, with exporters selling and importers buying, mitigating some of the rupee’s intraday volatility.

Domestic equity markets opened lower alongside ͏the currency movement. The Sensex lost 169.64 points to 84,909.30, and the Nifty dropped 42.35 points to 26,128.90 in early trade. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the last session, offloading equities worth ₹107.63 crore, as per exchange data. 

Rupee Recovers After Four-Day ͏Decline 

The rupee closed at 90.18 on Tuesday, up by 12 paise after a four-day losing streak. The early trade action on Wednesday ͏extended this r͏e͏covery, as ͏the currency further strengthened to 89.92 in the early hours of trading.
