Mumbai, October 15: Indian equities witnessed a sharp divergence across sectors on Thursday, with information technology and financial stocks leading gains in benchmark indices even as companies linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure and the broader mid- and small-cap segments remained under pressure. The Nifty IT index rose 1.8%, extending its three-session advance to around 8.4%, while heavyweight financial stocks gained ahead of quarterly earnings. However, the sell-off in global AI-linked stocks weighed on Indian companies exposed to optical fibre, data centres and related infrastructure, highlighting the uneven nature of the market recovery.

IT Stocks Extend Rally; Wipro in Focus

Information technology stocks remained among the strongest performers, supported by better-than-expected September-quarter earnings from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS, up 2%) and HCL Technologies (2.5%). The Nifty IT index gained 1.8%, taking its advance over three sessions to around 8.4%, as investors responded to earnings performance and reassessed the outlook for technology stocks amid the global correction in AI-linked shares.

Infosys also attracted buying interest during the session, rising 2%, while Tech Mahindra (4.7%) and Wipro (1.8%) were in focus ahead of Wipro’s September-quarter results. Investors will track management commentary on discretionary technology spending, deal conversions, operating margins and demand conditions for clues on whether the earnings recovery can continue.

Financial Stocks Gain Ahead of Earnings

Financial stocks provided strong support to the benchmarks, with the Nifty financial services index rising 1.7%. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank gained 2.3% and 3.8%, respectively, ahead of their quarterly earnings over the weekend.

Private banking stocks also benefited from buying in heavyweight counters, helping lift the headline indices. Investors will look for updates on loan growth, deposit mobilisation, net interest margins, asset quality and credit costs to assess the outlook for lenders amid uncertainty over global interest rates and foreign fund flows.

AI-Linked Stocks Slide Amid Global Tech Sell-Off

While mainstream IT stocks advanced, companies with indirect exposure to the artificial intelligence investment theme faced selling pressure. Sterlite Technologies, HFCL and MTAR Technologies hit their exchange-mandated lower circuits of 5% each. Netweb Technologies fell 7%, while TD Power Systems declined 6.2%.

The weakness followed a sharp sell-off in global technology shares as hotter-than-expected US inflation raised concerns over further Federal Reserve rate hikes and the sustainability of the global AI investment boom. Higher interest rates can weigh on valuations of high-growth companies, while doubts over future AI-related spending can affect businesses supplying optical fibre, data-centre equipment and other supporting infrastructure.

Airtel, Reliance Shares Gain; Jio IPO in Focus

Telecom stock Bharti Airtel rose 3.3%, while Reliance Industries gained 3.4% after the refining to telecom giant’s arm Jio Platforms announced plans for what would be India’s largest initial public offering. The proposed listing has not only drawn attention to the valuation of Reliance but also provided investors with a clearer benchmark for assessing the telecom sector. Telecom stock Vodafone Idea which had gained on the Jio IPO news declined towards the end falling 1.2%.

Mid- and Small-Caps Underperform

The gains in benchmark indices were not reflected across the broader market. The Nifty Smallcap index fell 1.3%, while the midcap index declined 0.4%, indicating that buying remained concentrated in select large-cap stocks. Eleven of the 16 major sectoral indices advanced, but weakness in AI-linked technology infrastructure companies and smaller stocks limited the breadth of the recovery.

Going forward, investors will track corporate earnings, Wipro’s results, developments in global technology stocks and signals on US interest rates. Financial-sector earnings will also be important in determining whether the rally in heavyweight stocks broadens into a more sustained recovery.
