Mumbai, July 20: Indian benchmark indices are likely to open on a negative note on Monday, tracking weakness across Asian markets while a surge in crude oil prices to above $90 a barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East added to investor caution.

Asian equities showed pressure after rising geopolitical risks and higher energy prices dampened risk appetite.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 was closed for a holiday while South Korean equities on chip-heavy Kospi were down 3% as retail investors got squeezed out of leveraged positions. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan declined 0.3%.

Investor sentiment remained fragile.

Wall Street Ends Lower

U.S. equities ended Friday’s session lower due to the technology sell-off.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (down 0.77%), the S&P 500 (1.01%) and the Nasdaq Composite (1.40%) all finished in the red, with semiconductor companies leading the decline. AI-linked stocks remained under pressure as investors reassessed aggressive capital expenditure expectations across the sector.

Streaming giant Netflix also weighed on sentiment after its outlook disappointed investors.

Oil Above $90 Raises Inflation Concerns

Crude oil emerged as another key concern for global investors.

Brent crude climbed above $90 per barrel for the first time in over a month after the United States and Iran intensified military attacks in the Middle East, raising fears of prolonged supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments.

Higher crude prices have revived concerns over inflation and could complicate the outlook for global central banks, including the Reserve Bank of India.

For India, which imports the bulk of its crude requirements, sustained strength in oil prices could pressure the rupee, widen the current account deficit and weigh on corporate margins, particularly for sectors with high fuel costs.

Focus On Domestic Markets

Against this backdrop, Indian equities are expected to begin the week cautiously.

The combination of weak Asian cues and elevated crude prices points to a lower open for the Sensex and Nifty.

Market participants will also monitor foreign institutional investor (FII) activity, movement in the rupee and global bond yields for further direction. Stock-specific action is likely to continue as the June-quarter earnings season gathers momentum, with investors closely tracking management commentary on demand trends, margins and capital expenditure.

While domestic fundamentals remain relatively resilient, analysts believe global developments—including the technology correction and geopolitical tensions—could dictate near-term market sentiment. If crude oil continues its upward trajectory or the sell-off in global technology shares deepens, Indian markets could witness heightened volatility in the sessions ahead.
