Mumbai, July 14: Silver remained flat at Rs 2,350 in national market on Tuesday as premium markets Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala converged with rest of the country bringing an end to the premium with which they traded through Monday and for most part of last week. Ten gram silver was priced at Rs 2,350 in the national market on Tuesday, same rate at which it closed on Monday at Rs 2,350 per 10 grams.

Steep discount with which silver was available in premium markets like Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala disappeared on Tuesday with the three centres quoting silver at par with the rest of India. Prior to Tuesday’s session, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala had been trading with a Rs 50 premium over the national rate, goodreturns.in reported.

Sharp movement in silver prices over the past few days have been driven primarily by global cues. While international trends have been dominating the price movement of the white metal in India, factors like demand from industrial buyers such as electronics and solar photovoltaic manufacturers at home, seasonal demand as well as investment demand continues to impact day-to-day movement of silver prices.

On Tuesday, Chennai sold at Rs 2,350 per 10 grams, Rs 50 lower than Monday’s price of Rs 2,400. Hyderabad also traded 10 grams of silver at Rs 2,350 per 10 grams, down Rs 50 from Monday’s Rs 2,400. Silver in Kerala also recorded a decline of Rs 50 to trade at Rs 2,350 per 10 grams on Tuesday. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad quoted their 10 gm rates unchanged at Rs 2,350.

Only Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala cut prices while the rest of the country quoted flat prices indicating that the price fall was largely concentrated in the three erstwhile premium markets and not a nationwide correction like on Monday when all markets slipped Rs 50. With Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala ruling at par with the rest of the country, all centres are now quoting a uniform price of Rs 2,350 per 10 grams.

Experts feel the convergence of prices in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala with the rest of the country indicated that the additional demand which was pushing up prices in these premium markets has eased. For now, silver will remain volatile tracking global factors such as US-Iran tensions and developments on trade talks between the US and China, analysts said. Meanwhile, positive factors for silver prices in the medium term include demand from industry as well as ongoing interest from retail investors who are buying silver in these months due to the wedding season.

If tensions escalate further between Iran and US leading to disruption of shipping activity through Strait of Hormuz, both gold and silver will benefit from safe-haven demand, which will overturn the weakness witnessed in both metals on Tuesday. Disclaimer: The prices mentioned in the story are indicative. Jewellers across the country normally charge about 3 percent more than the rates quoted here due to GST. There will be additional charges for making which will vary from jeweller to jeweller depending on the design.

Gold also edged lower on Tuesday with 24 karat gold quoting at Rs 1,42,910 per 10 grams nationally, down Rs 1,410 from the previous closing price of Rs 1,44,320. 22 karat gold traded at Rs 1,31,000 per 10 grams, down Rs 1,290 from its previous closing price of Rs 1,32,290. Similarly 18 karat gold sold at Rs 1,07,180 per 10 grams, down Rs 1,060 from its previous closing price of Rs 1,08,240.

Silver price movement on Tuesday came on the back of a similar move in gold. Both metals corrected from recent highs on hopes that tensions between Iran and US may ease. Easying of Iran-US tensions resulted in some profit booking in safe-haven gold and silver ETFs. Both metals may look up to crude oil prices and rupee-dollar movement for further cues.
