New Delhi, Nov 2: Silver is priced at Rs. 2,000 for 10 grams in all 10 cities tracked by Goodreturns.in on Monday, which makes it Rs. 20,000 for 100 grams. That is Rs. 100 lower than Friday’s Rs. 2,100 in every city, a fall of about 4.8 per cent. It is also Rs. 150 below Thursday’s Rs. 2,150 and Rs. 200 below Wednesday’s Rs. 2,200, a fall of about 9.1 per cent in under a week.

Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad fell from Rs. 2,100 to Rs. 2,000 per 10 grams. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala fell by the same Rs. 100, so all 10 cities remain at one price. The 100 gram rate of Rs. 20,000 is identical everywhere and is Rs. 1,000 lower than on Friday.

On a per-gram basis, silver is at Rs. 200, which is Rs. 10 less than the Rs. 210 of Friday. One kilogram of silver costs Rs. 2,00,000, which is Rs. 10,000 less than Friday’s Rs. 2,10,000 for bulk buyers, a fall of about 4.8 per cent. The national rate is the same as the rate in each of the 10 cities.

Silver price in India follows international prices, which can move the 10 gram rate in either direction, while local demand and supply play only a marginal role in city-level rates. In the seven cities, the rate fell from Rs. 2,300 on Wednesday, October 21, to Rs. 2,250 on Thursday and Rs. 2,200 on Friday, held there for four sessions, and then slipped to Rs. 2,150, Rs. 2,100 and now Rs. 2,000. That is Rs. 300, or about 13.0 per cent, below the October 21 level, a steady slide rather than a one-day move.

Equities rallied on Monday. The Nifty 50 was at 23,329.25 around 10:28 am, up 276.15 points or 1.20 per cent from Friday’s close of 23,053.10.

These are rates for the metal alone. Silver jewellery costs more once making charges and 3% GST are added. On a 10 gram purchase at Rs. 2,000, the GST alone comes to Rs. 60, which takes the cost to Rs. 2,060 before making charges. On 100 grams at Rs. 20,000, the GST comes to Rs. 600. Making charges vary by jeweller and come on top, so buyers should compare quotes before they pay.

With Dussehra behind us and Dhanteras and Diwali only days away, coins, idols and utensils tend to draw buyers. At Rs. 2,000 per 10 grams, 50 grams of silver costs Rs. 10,000 and 100 grams costs Rs. 20,000 before charges. Buyers waiting for a dip have now seen the rate fall three times in four sessions. The question is whether Rs. 2,000 holds or the slide continues.

Against gold, silver is also cheaper. With 24-carat gold in Delhi at Rs. 1,39,520 per 10 grams, a 10 gram unit of gold costs about 70 times a 10 gram unit of silver, up from about 68 on Friday. Gold fell about 2.0 per cent from Friday, while silver fell about 4.8 per cent. Traders watch this ratio to judge which metal looks cheaper, though it is only one input and does not predict direction.
