New Delhi, Oct 30: Silver is priced at Rs. 2,100 for 10 grams in all 10 cities tracked by Goodreturns.in on Friday, which makes it Rs. 21,000 for 100 grams and Rs. 2,10,000 for a kilogram. The rate works out to Rs. 210 per gram, which is the national rate. It is Rs. 50 lower than Thursday in every city, the second straight session in which the 10 gram rate has fallen by the same amount.

Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad fell from Rs. 2,150 to Rs. 2,100 per 10 grams, a cut of about 2.3 per cent. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala fell by the same Rs. 50, so all 10 cities are again at one price. The 100 gram rate of Rs. 21,000 is identical everywhere, and a kilogram is Rs. 5,000 cheaper than on Thursday. Over the two sessions since Wednesday, October 28, the 10 gram rate has dropped Rs. 100, or about 4.5 per cent.

Silver price in India follows international prices, which can move the 10 gram rate in either direction, while local demand and supply play only a marginal role in city-level rates. In the seven cities, the rate fell from Rs. 2,300 on Wednesday, October 21, to Rs. 2,250 on Thursday and Rs. 2,200 on Friday, held there for four sessions, and then slipped to Rs. 2,150 and now Rs. 2,100. That is Rs. 200, or about 8.7 per cent, below the October 21 level, a steady slide rather than a one-day move. Goodreturns reported that spot gold and silver fell about 1 per cent after the US Federal Reserve left rates unchanged.

Equities were marginally higher on Friday. The Nifty 50 was at 22,962.40 at 10:55 am, up 25.65 points or 0.11 per cent from Thursday’s close of 22,936.75. USD/INR futures for November 26 were at Rs. 95.50 at 10:53 am, little changed from Thursday. Silver has now fallen on both days even as the equity market has stayed in positive territory.

Every city is lower over the 18 days. The seven cities are down Rs. 300 per 10 grams, a fall of about 12.5 per cent, while Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala are down Rs. 350, a fall of about 14.3 per cent. A kilogram costs Rs. 30,000 less in the seven cities than on October 12 and Rs. 35,000 less in the three southern cities. The gap between the south and the rest, which was Rs. 50 per 10 grams on October 12, has closed completely.

These are rates for the metal alone. Silver jewellery costs more once making charges and 3% GST are added. On a 10 gram purchase at Rs. 2,100, the GST alone comes to Rs. 63, which takes the cost to Rs. 2,163 before making charges. On 100 grams at Rs. 21,000, the GST comes to Rs. 630. Making charges vary by jeweller and come on top, so buyers should compare quotes before they pay.

With Dussehra behind us and Dhanteras and Diwali less than two weeks away, coins, idols and utensils tend to draw buyers. At Rs. 2,100 per 10 grams, 50 grams of silver costs Rs. 10,500 and 100 grams costs Rs. 21,000 before charges. Buyers waiting for a dip have got a second one in two days. The question is whether Rs. 2,100 holds or the slide continues.

Against gold, silver is also cheaper. With 24-carat gold in Delhi at Rs. 1,42,410 per 10 grams, a 10 gram unit of gold costs about 68 times a 10 gram unit of silver. Traders watch this ratio to judge which metal looks cheaper, though it is only one input and does not predict direction. Gold fell about 1.2 per cent on Friday, while silver fell about 2.3 per cent.
