Mumbai, Sept 25: Indian market indices opened in green on Friday and managed to retain their opening gains for the first hour of trade. BSE’s Sensex traded 60.79 points or 0.08 per cent higher at 73,641.33 as of 9.20 am IST recovering some of the losses seen on Thursday. NSE’s Nifty was trading at 23,078.40 gaining 15.30 points or 0.07 per cent as of 9.21 am IST but still way lower than where it was trading earlier in the week. This came after Asian markets traded in negative territory and the Wall Street saw a marginal decline on Thursday.

News Out of Iran

With news emerging that there has been some progress made in the last 7-month long war with Iran. The US and Iran have been negotiating in New York over a plan that could see Iran open up the strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting their embargo on them. Officials from the White House have stated that Iran is “desperate for a deal”. Though like last time when talks collapsed in July there is a chance these negotiations may fail. With traders seeing this as slightly bullish towards Indian equities.

Crude Slides but Remains Elevated

WTI and Brent are trading down from their Thursday closing price. Gasoline and natural gas also traded down. Crude oil prices traded down on Friday. WTI crude lost 1.54 per cent at $93.19 and Brent crude fell 0.74 per cent at $105.81. While Murban crude rose by 4 per cent at $117.60. Natural gas fell sharply by 4.09 per cent and gasoline declined by 2.16 per cent. Opec Basket was down 2.98 per cent at $107.69. Even with this pull back we are still at high price points compared to what they were trading at before the spike we saw this week. As tensions around the strait of Hormuz continue. Traders will remain cautious of another spike if the talks in New York fall apart. WTI Midland rose by 2.58 per cent at $95.92.

Asian Markets Fall

Asian markets were trading in the negatives on Friday morning, following Wall Street’s decline on Thursday. With most Asian markets following suit on Friday morning. Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen were down sharply. While Australia and Singapore also traded down. Japan and South Korea were the only markets trading up, which in turn caused Indian equities to remain flat.

Top Movers

Stock-level moves were far more pronounced than the index gains would suggest, with financials and autos leading the advance and IT names dragging on the other side. Among Nifty 50 stocks, five names led the gainers’ list. Bajaj Finserv (BAJAJFINSV) rose 0.73 per cent to an LTP of Rs 1,775.10 from a previous close of Rs 1,762.30. Shriram Finance (SHRIRAMFIN) advanced 0.64 per cent to Rs 996.30, up from Rs 990. Power Grid Corporation (POWERGRID) gained 0.62 per cent to Rs 268.05 against a prior close of Rs 266.40. Bajaj Auto (BAJAJ-AUTO) climbed 0.61 per cent to Rs 11,276, up from Rs 11,208, and Axis Bank (AXISBANK) added 0.56 per cent to Rs 1,193.20 from Rs 1,186.50.

On the losing side, IT majors led the declines. Infosys (INFY) fell 2.11 per cent to Rs 993.10 from a previous close of Rs 1,014.50, the sharpest drop on the index. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) dropped 1.94 per cent to Rs 2,046.50 against Rs 2,087. Wipro (WIPRO) slipped 1.08 per cent to Rs 161.87 from Rs 163.64, ONGC (ONGC) eased 1.05 per cent to Rs 236.50 from Rs 239, and Tech Mahindra (TECHM) declined 0.91 per cent to Rs 1,529 from a prior close of Rs 1,543. The divide underscores a rotation out of technology stocks, which remain exposed to a weaker dollar and soft demand commentary, and into rate-sensitive financials and domestic cyclicals.

Broad Market and Sectoral Indices

Breadth across the broader market and sectoral indices was mixed but tilted mildly positive in early trade. Nifty Smallcap 50 rose by 0.31 per cent. Nifty Next 50 traded up 0.09 per cent and Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.08 per cent. We did see some market indices trade down. Nifty Midsmallcap 400 and Nifty Smallcap 250 were down 0.04 per cent each. While Nifty Smallcap 500 was lower by 0.03 per cent.

Sector-wise, Nifty Realty was up 0.44 per cent. Nifty Auto traded up 0.33 per cent and Nifty Bank rose 0.28 per cent. IT continued to lag behind with Nifty IT down 1.43 per cent. Nifty Chemicals fell 0.20 per cent and Nifty Consumer Durable was down 0.18 per cent.

Middle East Situation

Officials from the US and Iran are currently meeting in New York to discuss potentially reopening the Strait of Hormuz and removing US embargo on them. Both countries want to maintain control over the situation. According to a White House official, Iran is desperate for a deal and that US President Donald Trump has all the leverage. While an Iranian official said that they can look at allowing transit through Hormuz at no cost and discuss that at a later date.

Saudi Arabia will be meeting with Turkey and Pakistan following recent missile and drone attacks on Saudi land by the Houthi rebels. There were sirens heard in Mecca, Jeddah and Yanbu as missiles and drones flew through the area. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke to Fox News and said that “the Houthis are responsible for their own actions,” after giving a speech at the U.N General Assembly.

Asian Stocks

Asian stocks traded lower on Friday morning. With the Hang Seng Index falling 1.69 per cent at 24,343.68 and the Shenzhen Component Index losing 2.34 per cent. The Shanghai Composite was down 1.22 per cent. Australia’s ASX 200 dropped 0.49 per cent and Singapore’s Straits Times Index was down 0.06 per cent. Malaysia and Thailand traded flat. While South Korea and Japan were the only markets up. The Kospi rose 0.90 per cent and the Nikkei gained 1.23 per cent or 804.15 points.

US Stocks

US stocks closed mixed on Thursday. The Nasdaq 100 gained 0.03 per cent and the NYSE Composite lost 0.13 per cent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.31 per cent and the Russell 2000 dropped 0.11 per cent. While Utility stocks fell 0.81 per cent.

Crude Prices

Crude oil prices traded down on Friday. WTI crude lost 1.54 per cent to $93.19 and Brent crude fell 0.74 per cent to $105.81. While Murban crude rose by 4 per cent at $117.60. Natural gas fell sharply by 4.09 per cent and gasoline declined by 2.16 per cent. Opec Basket was down 2.98 per cent to $107.69. Even with this pull back we are still at high price points compared to what they were trading at before the spike we saw this week. WTI Midland rose 2.58 per cent to $95.92.

Yesterday’s Wrap Up

Indian market indices saw a sharp decline on Thursday. The Sensex crashed by 1,247.71 points or 1.67 per cent to end the day at 73,580.54 and the Nifty fell 383.70 points or 1.64 per cent to finish at 23,063.10 on a spike in crude and selling in Reliance and Banking stocks. Out of 30 stocks on the Sensex only one ended unchanged. With Bajaj Finance down 5.47 per cent, Axis Bank fell 4.67 per cent and Bajaj Finserv lost 4.06 per cent. NTPC ended the day unchanged. Ponmudi R from Enrich Money attributed this to rising bond yields and crude prices. US 10 Year bond yields were hovering near 5.11 per cent and 30 year bond yields were at their highest since 2004. NSE shares closed almost 2 per cent higher at Rs 1,818. While FIIs bought Rs 1,617.45 crores worth of equities on Wednesday which wasn’t enough to offset the losses on Thursday.
