Sun Pharma’s share is among the top gainers at Nifty 50 today. At 1:50 p.m. IST today, 18th September, 2025 its share price is up by 1.41%, trading at Rs 1,643. Benchmark Nifty 50 index is up by 0.14% at this time.
Sun Pharma’s stock has underperformed this year
In the past 5 days Sun Pharma’s share has gained 2.28%. Much of these gains have come since yesterday. Year-to-date the stock has lost 13.03%. In the same period, Nifty 50 has gained 6.84%. The stock has therefore underperformed the Nifty 50 index by more than 19 % this year.
The gains today are probably because a major brokerage firm gave a BUY rating to the stock. The US market contributes around 40% to the total revenues of the company. India and US have resumed trade talks to reach a bilateral trade deal. If the deal is reached and it lowers US tariffs on Indian goods, then Sun Pharma will stand to gain.
Pharmaceutical products have lower price elasticity of demand than other products. Customers tend to be less price sensitive regarding pharma products. But tariffs as high as 50% that US government has presently imposed on Indian goods can erode some of the comparative advantage of the generic drug products of Indian pharma companies, like Sun Pharma, in the US market.
