Mumbai, November 4: PC Jeweller, DSP Gold ETF, Vodafone Idea and YES Bank were the most actively traded stocks by volume on the NSE on Wednesday, November 4. PC Jeweller surged 6.94% as jewellery stocks attracted buying interest ahead of Dhanteras, while DSP Gold ETF advanced 2.79%, tracking a recovery in international bullion prices. Vodafone Idea gained 0.41%, extending its recent gains, while YES Bank rose 1.30% after declining in the previous session, with its ₹8,415-crore AT-1 bond dispute remaining in focus.

PC Jeweller Limited (up 6.94%)

Shares of PC Jeweller Ltd surged as jewellery stocks attracted buying interest ahead of Dhanteras, with investors tracking expectations of robust festive-season demand.

The buying interest extended across the jewellery sector, with expectations of stronger consumer spending during the upcoming festive and wedding seasons supporting sentiment. Dhanteras, one of the most important occasions for gold and jewellery purchases in India, falls on Friday, November 6, this year.

PC Jeweller was among the stocks trading in positive territory in the jewellery pack. Titan Company and Senco Gold also gained.

P N Gadgil Jewellers advanced, while Thangamayil Jewellery rose. Kalyan Jewellers India was also trading higher.

The sector has come into focus as investors assess whether festive purchases will translate into stronger quarterly performances for organised jewellery retailers. The December quarter is particularly important for the industry, given the combination of Dhanteras, Diwali and the subsequent wedding season.

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival and is traditionally considered an auspicious occasion for purchasing gold, silver, jewellery, coins and other valuables.

The festival holds considerable significance for jewellery retailers, as households typically step up purchases of precious metals and ornaments during the period. Consumer preferences, however, have evolved amid elevated gold prices, with lightweight jewellery, smaller-ticket purchases and the exchange of old gold gaining traction.

These changing purchasing patterns are being closely monitored by investors as they assess the industry’s ability to sustain sales growth despite higher precious metal prices.

DSP Mutual Fund – DSP Gold ETF (up 2.79%)

Units of DSP Mutual Fund’s DSP Gold ETF jumped 2.79% on Wednesday, November 4, tracking a sharp recovery in international gold prices. The rally in the gold-backed exchange-traded fund came as bullion gained amid a weaker US dollar and declining US Treasury yields following key Democratic victories in the US midterm elections.

Spot gold climbed 2.2% to $4,016.01 per ounce, while US gold futures for December delivery advanced 2.2% to $4,026.90 per ounce.

The gains also came amid continued geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran conflict, which has sustained demand for safe-haven assets.

Vodafone Idea Limited (up 0.41%)

Vodafone Idea shares edged higher on Wednesday, extending gains for a second consecutive session, after rising on Monday following the telecom operator’s disclosure of a financial disincentive of ₹89.16 lakh imposed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for alleged regulatory non-compliance.

In a regulatory filing dated November 2, Vodafone Idea said it had received an order from TRAI on November 1 imposing the financial disincentive under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018.

The order relates to alleged violations of provisions under the regulations during the quarter ended December 2024. Vodafone Idea said the maximum financial impact of the order was limited to ₹89.16 lakh. The company added that it was reviewing the order and assessing the appropriate course of action.

Vodafone Idea shares had also attracted buying interest on Monday after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved French billionaire Xavier Niel’s proposed acquisition of a 16.2% stake in UK-based Vodafone Group Plc for approximately 5.1 billion euros.

The approval removes a key regulatory hurdle for the proposed investment in Vodafone Group, which has a significant presence in India through its joint venture with the Aditya Birla Group, Vodafone Idea.

The transaction is being routed through Vega SAS, a subsidiary of Niel’s family investment vehicle, Maya SAS. Under the proposed deal, Vega SAS will acquire a 16.2% stake in Vodafone Group from Emirates Telecommunications Group for approximately 5.1 billion euros.

Upon completion, the transaction will make Niel’s investment vehicle the British telecom group’s largest single shareholder.

Although Vega SAS does not have direct business operations in India, the proposed acquisition required clearance from the country’s competition regulator because of Vodafone Group’s significant presence in the domestic telecommunications market through Vodafone Idea.

The telecom operator also remained in focus after introducing four new voice-only prepaid plans in India, with prices starting at ₹179. The move is in line with a TRAI directive requiring telecom operators to offer affordable voice and SMS-only recharge options without bundling data services.

The revised plans are aimed at subscribers who primarily require calling and messaging services rather than mobile data, potentially providing greater flexibility to consumers who do not need bundled internet access.

The developments have kept Vodafone Idea shares on investors’ radar, with market participants tracking regulatory developments, the proposed change in Vodafone Group’s shareholding and the company’s efforts to strengthen its competitive position in India’s telecom market.

Yes Bank Limited (up 1.30%)

YES Bank shares rose on Wednesday, November 4, after declining in the previous session, as investors continued to track developments surrounding the reinstatement of ₹8,415 crore worth of additional tier-1 (AT-1) bonds written off by the lender in March 2020. The Yes Bank AT1 Bond Holders Association reportedly demanded a timeline for payments after the expiry of a deadline put out by a debenture trustee.

The dispute follows the Supreme Court’s October 15 judgment dismissing appeals filed by YES Bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Centre against a Bombay High Court ruling that had quashed the write-off of the ₹8,415 crore AT-1 bonds in March 2020.
