Mumbai, July 6: Spot gold prices in India extended gains into Monday, increasing by Rs 2,930 for 10 grams of 24 karat gold (99.9% purity). The national price of gold is now Rs 1,46,720, up Friday’s close of Rs 1,43,790. The price of gold of 22 karat (91.6% purity) increased by Rs 2,680 to Rs 1,34,490 for 10 grams from Rs 1,31,810 on Friday, while gold of 18 karat (75% purity) gained Rs 2,190 to Rs 1,10,040 per 10 grams from Rs 1,07,850.

Gold prices were last at these levels during the February 1 settlement. Monday’s gains follow Friday’s equally strong Rs 3,020 rebound gain which had broken three consecutive sessions of declines through the middle of last week. In less than two sessions, gold has now added almost Rs 6,000 per 10 grams of 24 karat gold. Buoyant demand from bargain hunters as well as safe-haven buyers appear to have returned with a vengeance.

Escalating tensions in West Asia also remain a concern for investors, although last week’s inconclusive talks held in Doha over the Strait of Hormuz failed to dial down geopolitical tensions, which continues to keep buyers scooping up physical metal.

Among other Indian cities, Chennai prices were once again the costliest for bullion buyers. 10 grams of 24 karat gold sold for Rs 1,49,450 in Chennai, while 22 karat gold fetched Rs 1,36,990 and Rs 1,14,390 for 18 karat gold. The city’s rates are thus Rs 2,730 dearer than India’s national benchmark price of Rs 1,46,720 for 24 karat gold. The premium in Chennai over national rates can be attributed to local taxes as well as the pricing that jewellers associations in Tamil Nadu recommend their members adhere to.

Delhi came in second, with the price of 24 karat gold at Rs 1,46,870, Rs 1,34,640 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,10,190 for 18 karat gold for 10 grams. Delhi is Rs 150 premium to national prices for 24K gold, a spread that has remained consistent through the last few sessions.

Vadodara and Ahmedabad are the only other cities where gold prices were marked only marginally higher than the national benchmark price, at Rs 1,46,770 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,34,540 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,10,090 for 18 karat gold for 10 grams. The Gujarat cities price their gold at a mere Rs 50 premium to national rates for 24 karat gold.

Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune reported no deviations from the national price whatsoever, with the cities quoting the exact benchmark prices of Rs 1,46,720, Rs 1,34,490 and Rs 1,10,040 for 24, 22 and 18 karat gold respectively. This highlights just how correlated the prices in majority of India’s metro cities are to the national benchmark price, even as rates rise. As stated above, all the above mentioned rates are indicative of actual rates. At the time of actual purchase, GST at 3 per cent will be charged along with making charges as decided by the jeweller. Depending on the complexity of the design and the retailer one choses, making charges can range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 per 10 grams.
