Mumbai, 19 September 2025: Vodafone Idea Ltd (NSE: IDEA) shares climbed 6.89% to ₹8.38 by 2:51 PM IST after touching an intraday high of ₹8.82, as market focus intensified on the Supreme Court hearing regarding the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) fresh ₹9,450 crore adjusted gross revenue (AGR) demand.

Vodafone Idea Share Price Jumps as AGR Hearing Creates Legal Uncertainty

Vodafone Idea’s stock opened at ₹7.91, surged nearly ₹0.54 intraday, and tested the upper range of ₹8.82, before trading steady at ₹8.38 in afternoon deals. The strong upward move comes even as the telco continues its legal battle with the DoT over AGR dues.

The hearing before the Supreme Court is critical, as the DoT claims the dues arise from account finalisation, while the company maintains they include duplicated entries and pre-merger liabilities. The outcome could directly influence Vodafone Idea’s cash flow visibility and lender negotiations.

Fresh ₹9,450 Crore AGR Claim Weighs on Vodafone Idea’s Balance Sheet

The Department of Telecommunications has demanded an additional ₹9,450 crore, of which ₹5,675 crore relates to Vodafone Group’s pre-merger liabilities and ₹2,774 crore to the post-merger entity. Vodafone Idea argues that the calculation involves duplication and must be reconciled before enforcement.

The company has filed a plea to quash the demand, emphasising that it is not a case of reassessment but errors arising from finalisation. If upheld, this liability could further strain the company’s already stressed financials and impact its ability to raise capital.

Lenders Seek AGR Clarity Before Committing New Funding

Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra recently highlighted that lenders remain cautious and are awaiting clarity on the AGR issue before moving forward with fresh funding commitments. He added that a favourable resolution would help the company proceed with capital expenditure plans and long-term growth strategy, particularly its ongoing 4G and upcoming 5G network expansion.

The dispute thus acts as a crucial determinant of Vodafone Idea’s survival roadmap, with its continuation hinging on whether the Supreme Court rules in favour of the company or upholds the DoT’s demand.

The Supreme Court’s decision on the AGR dues will be pivotal for Vodafone Idea, influencing its debt position, lender negotiations, and future capital expenditure. The hearing’s outcome holds significance not only for the company’s balance sheet but also for India’s broader telecom landscape, where financial stability and sectoral competition remain key concerns.
