26 August 2025: The shares of Vodafone Idea (NSE: IDEA) plummeted by more than 10% during the early trading hours on Tuesday. The fall came after the MoS (Minister of State) for Communications, Mr Chandra S Pemmasani, suggested that the Central Government has no plans to provide any further relief to the debt-laden telecom operator. The minister indicated that the government already holds 49% equity of the company after the conversion of ₹53000 crores of government dues into equity back in 2021.
The Vodafone Idea share price surged in the past six sessions, moving up by almost 20%, following updates that the PMO planned to make a major call on the relief proposal for the company.
Stock under pressure
On Tuesday (10:30 AM), the shares fell by 10.14% and were trading at ₹6.65 per share. Today’s fall was preceded by a sharp six-session rally that had resulted in a surge in the stock by close to 20%. The stock opened at ₹7.10 today, and the lowest point was ₹6.60 per share. The volume has been pretty high (over 64 crore shares traded) with almost 60% traders selling the stock.
Ball in Vodafone Idea’s Court
After declining any further bailout plan for the troubled telecom operator, the MoS suggested that the ball is in VI’s court now. According to the minister, Vodafone is a seasoned business, and its management knows how to do business and tackle tricky situations. A few months earlier, the company had stated that it would not be in a position to sustain its operations after FY26 in the absence of visible government support, something which the MoS has categorically denied.
Impact on Investors
The investors face a tricky situation as the short-term gains (of the past couple of days) are all set to erode. There is significant pressure from the traders who are in a profit-booking spree. For long-term investors, there is an uncertainty looming due to large dues (₹83,400 crore) and a possibility of further dilution, making the stock a high-risk, news-driven bet.
