Mumbai, October 26: Crude oil prices declined on Monday, October 26, retreating from near six-month highs recorded last week, as investors assessed the outlook for global supplies amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 2.2% to $101 per barrel, while Brent crude futures declined 2.1% to $114.3 per barrel.

The decline followed a sharp rally in the previous session, when both benchmarks settled nearly $3 higher after attacks in Saudi Arabia heightened concerns about potential disruptions to oil supplies. Despite Monday’s pullback, crude prices remained elevated, with investors wary that further escalation in the region could tighten global energy supplies and trigger another round of price increases.

Oil retreats after sharp weekly gains

Brent crude rose around 6% over the previous week, while WTI gained 2.3%, reflecting growing concerns about the security of oil production and transportation infrastructure in the Middle East.

The latest decline offered some relief after the rally, although prices remained vulnerable to developments in the region. Market participants are weighing the possibility of a technical correction against the risk that further attacks could disrupt production, exports or critical shipping routes.

The persistence of geopolitical risks has kept oil markets volatile, with traders closely monitoring developments involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. The recent surge also reflects concerns that any prolonged disruption could reduce the availability of crude at a time when global economies remain sensitive to energy costs.

Houthi attacks keep supply risks in focus

Concerns over supplies intensified after the Houthis claimed attacks on a Saudi airport and oil facilities over the weekend. Saudi Arabia said it intercepted additional missiles and drones on Sunday, while its main airport partially resumed operations following damage in an earlier round of attacks.

Saudi Arabia is a major global oil exporter, making any threat to its energy infrastructure a key concern for international markets. Further attacks could disrupt production or logistics and raise the risk premium investors attach to crude prices.

However, the immediate impact on prices will depend on the extent of any actual disruption to oil production and exports. Investors will also assess whether diplomatic efforts can contain the conflict and prevent further damage to energy infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia, US take steps to support supply resilience

Saudi Arabia plans to begin storing crude oil in Singapore in the second half of 2027 as part of efforts to strengthen its supply-chain resilience in Asia. The initiative could help improve the kingdom’s ability to respond to disruptions and maintain supplies to key markets.

Separately, the US Department of Energy authorised the release of 400,000 barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to address a supply disruption at a Louisiana refinery. While the release is intended to alleviate a specific disruption, it also highlights the measures being taken to manage supply pressures.

What high crude prices mean for India

Elevated crude oil prices remain a concern for India, which depends heavily on imports to meet its energy requirements. A sustained rise in international oil prices can increase the country’s import bill, put pressure on the rupee and add to inflationary pressures.

Higher crude prices can also raise input and transportation costs for businesses, potentially squeezing margins in sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and oil marketing. If elevated prices persist, they could complicate the inflation outlook and limit the scope for monetary easing.

For equity investors, the direction of crude oil prices will remain an important variable alongside corporate earnings and foreign fund flows. Although Monday’s decline offers some respite, the risk of renewed supply disruptions means oil prices could remain volatile.

Investors will track developments in the Middle East, the security of Saudi energy infrastructure and any signs of a sustained improvement in global supplies for further direction.
