Mumbai, Nov 4: The Sensex and the Nifty 50 rose on Wednesday, extending a four-session rally, with the BSE Sensex at 77,301.59 at 9.30 am, up 383.74 points or 0.50 per cent. The NSE Nifty 50 was at 23,921.20 at 9.31 am, higher by 110.35 points or 0.46 per cent.)

On Tuesday, the Sensex rose 1,225.07 points to 76,917.85 and the Nifty gained 370.05 points to 23,810.85, their highest closes in nearly two months.

Oil is the first support. Brent crude was at USD 102.71 a barrel, down 0.86 per cent, about 13 per cent below Friday’s six-month high of USD 118, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at USD 95.08, down 1.05 per cent. Lower crude eases pressure on India’s import bill and inflation.

Provisional exchange data showed that foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net buyers of Indian equities worth Rs 6,837 crore on Tuesday. They have recorded net purchases in five of the past six trading sessions, signalling a possible improvement in overseas investor sentiment towards domestic markets.

Reliance Industries (RELIANCE) jumped 11.6 per cent on Monday after its consolidated net profit rose 40.6 per cent to Rs 25,548 crore, and Marico surged 10 per cent on Tuesday after September-quarter results. National Stock Exchange of India, Multi Commodity Exchange of India and Awfis Space Solutions are in focus today after profit rises of 23 per cent, 130 per cent and 92.8 per cent.

Global cues are weak, and investors await the US midterm results. Japan’s Nikkei fell 3.56 per cent and South Korea’s Kospi 2.67 per cent, while Wall Street ended mixed. President Donald Trump says he is in no hurry for strikes on Iran, and NSE’s market-wide volatility index, India VIX, rose 2.14 per cent to 16.06.

Brent remains about 13 per cent below the six-month high of USD 118 touched on Friday, which has eased concerns over India’s import bill and inflation.

Iran War

Iran and the US remain far from a deal to end the war, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Tuesday, as Trump said he is ready but in no hurry for strikes and declined to rule out resuming combat operations after the elections. Overnight, the US carried out “defensive” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm island targeting surface-to-air missiles, which one US official said appeared limited and not a return to major combat, even as Iran’s security council secretary Mohsen Rezaei called the US response to Tehran’s demands unconvincing. Qatari mediators, who travelled to Tehran on Monday night to discuss a draft deal, expect feedback from both capitals within 36 hours, while Iran says the Strait of Hormuz will reopen only if its seven conditions are met. Tehran has warned of a forceful response in the region and beyond to any US strikes, and its armed forces chief said target lists covering US and Israeli assets are being updated.
