Mumbai, July 23: Shares of Cipla fell as much as 3% on Thursday after the drugmaker reported weaker-than-expected June-quarter earnings, with a sharp decline in net profit and a contraction in operating margins weighing on investor sentiment. The results highlighted pressure on the company’s U.S. business. As of writing the stock was down 2% at Rs 1,387.80.

Q1 Profit Falls 39% On Year

Cipla’s consolidated net profit fell 39% year-on-year to 789 crore in the quarter ended June 30, compared with 1,298 crore a year earlier. The profit figure missed analysts’ expectations.

Revenue from operations, however, rose 2% year-on-year to 7,119 crore. The divergence between revenue growth and profit performance reflected pressure on margins and weaker profitability during the quarter.

The earnings miss is likely to keep investors focused on the company’s cost structure and the performance of its key markets, particularly the United States, where Cipla has faced several product-specific headwinds.

U.S. Business Weighs On Performance

Cipla’s U.S. business was affected by lower sales of the generic version of Bristol Myers Squibb’s Revlimid following the loss of exclusivity for the product.

The company also faced supply disruptions for lanreotide, a drug used to treat rare tumours. Production was temporarily affected after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspected the facility of Cipla’s sole supplier of the medicine.

The developments added to pressure on the North American business, which remains an important contributor to Cipla’s overall revenue. Weakness in key products and supply constraints have emerged as significant challenges for the company as it attempts to maintain growth in a highly competitive U.S. generic drug market.

Margin Pressure Raises Investor Concerns

The sharp decline in profitability has also brought the company’s margins into focus. While revenue remained broadly stable, the steep fall in net profit points to a significant deterioration in earnings quality during the quarter.

Investors are likely to watch whether the margin pressure proves temporary or persists over the coming quarters. The recovery of U.S. sales, resolution of supply constraints and the company’s ability to manage product-specific challenges will be key to improving profitability.

The earnings performance also highlights the vulnerability of Indian pharmaceutical companies to regulatory developments and product-level changes in overseas markets. Even when overall revenue remains stable, the loss of exclusivity for high-value drugs or disruptions in the supply chain can have a disproportionate impact on profitability.

India, North America Key To Growth

India and North America together account for around two-thirds of Cipla’s revenue, making the performance of these two markets critical to the company’s overall growth trajectory.

The domestic business has remained a relatively important source of stability, but investors will be watching whether growth in India can offset weakness in the U.S. market.

Cipla’s ability to expand its domestic portfolio while navigating pricing pressure and regulatory challenges in North America will therefore remain central to its earnings outlook.

Investors Focus On Recovery Prospects

The weak June-quarter results are likely to increase scrutiny of Cipla’s near-term growth prospects. The sharp profit decline and margin contraction have raised concerns over the sustainability of earnings.

Investors are likely to track the recovery of the U.S. business.

For now, the earnings miss underscores the challenges facing Cipla as it seeks to balance weakness in its overseas operations with growth opportunities in the domestic market. A sustained recovery in profitability will depend on the company’s ability to restore momentum in the U.S. business while scaling its portfolio and emerging opportunities in India’s pharmaceutical market.
