Mumbai, Sept 4: Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Friday, tracking a strong rally on Wall Street and gains across most of Asia, even as the Iran war showed no signs of abating and crude oil prices held at elevated levels. The Sensex was trading at 76,546.76, up 393.90 points, or 0.52 per cent, at 9:37 am, while the Nifty stood at 23,905.20, up 31.75 points, or 0.13 per cent, as of 9:38 am.

The firm start comes a day after the Sensex and Nifty extended their losing streak to a fourth straight session on Thursday, pressured by renewed Iran war tensions and firm crude prices. Traders said Friday’s early gains reflected positive spillover from a sharp overnight rally on Wall Street and a broadly stronger Asian session, even as the unresolved Middle East conflict and elevated oil prices kept a cap on the advance.

Top Gainers And Losers

Among the top Nifty gainers, Wipro Ltd (WIPRO) led the pack, rising 1.45 per cent to an LTP of Rs 178.26 from a previous close of Rs 175.72. Infosys Ltd (INFY) added 0.96 per cent to Rs 1,141.2 against a previous close of Rs 1,130.3, while Trent Ltd (TRENT) gained 0.94 per cent to Rs 2,842 from Rs 2,815.6. Reliance Industries Ltd (RELIANCE) rose 0.84 per cent to Rs 1,313.4 against Rs 1,302.5, and InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (INDIGO) climbed 0.82 per cent to Rs 5,021 from Rs 4,980.

On the losing side, Cipla Ltd (CIPLA) was the biggest drag, falling 1.13 per cent to Rs 1,378.9 from a previous close of Rs 1,394.7. Eicher Motors Ltd (EICHERMOT) declined 0.98 per cent to Rs 7,615 against Rs 7,690, while Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MARUTI) slipped 0.58 per cent to Rs 12,783 from Rs 12,857. Nestle India Ltd (NESTLEIND) also fell 0.58 per cent to Rs 1,407.8 against Rs 1,416, and Titan Company Ltd (TITAN) dropped 0.45 per cent to Rs 5,004.5 from Rs 5,027.

Broad Market And Sectoral Indices

Among broad market indices, Nifty Smallcap 100 led the gainers, up 0.39 per cent, followed by Nifty 50, up 0.12 per cent, and Nifty 500, up 0.11 per cent. Sectorally, gains in Nifty IT, up 0.70 per cent, were offset by weakness in Nifty Pharma and Nifty FMCG, down 0.45 per cent and 0.24 per cent respectively.

Asian, US Markets In The Green

Asian markets extended their advance on Friday morning, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumping 2.07 per cent and Japan’s Nikkei 225 rising 0.86 per cent, as investors scaled back bets on a near-term Fed rate hike after dovish comments from Governor Christopher Waller. The remarks also weakened the US dollar and lifted the yen, adding to the region’s risk-on mood.

US stocks ended sharply higher on Thursday, with the Dow surging 1.18 per cent and the Nasdaq jumping 1.4 per cent, as Waller’s remarks and dovish comments from New York Fed President John Williams fuelled hopes the central bank would hold rates steady. Technology stocks led the rally, with chipmakers and Snowflake posting strong gains.

Iran War Shows No Signs Of Easing

US Vice President JD Vance on Thursday declined to describe the fighting between Washington and Tehran as a war and offered no timeline for its end, as the conflict entered its seventh month with no diplomatic talks underway. “I wouldn’t call it a war,” Vance said, arguing Washington had ended major combat operations even as fighting flared again this week. He said any resolution would hinge on Iran halting attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a route it has disrupted since the war began. The renewed hostilities follow US airstrikes on Iranian targets on Tuesday, pushing oil prices to their highest levels since July.

Oil Prices Stay Elevated

Oil prices stayed elevated on Friday, with the Iran conflict keeping supply concerns in focus even as prices eased marginally from Thursday’s surge. WTI crude was up 0.66 per cent at $91.90 a barrel, while Brent crude added 0.39 per cent to $95.89. The OPEC basket price was the standout, up 3.12 per cent at $98.29, while Murban crude slipped 1.30 per cent to $104.72.

Sensex, Nifty Had Ended Lower On Thursday

The Sensex and Nifty had ended lower on Thursday after a volatile session, with selling in IT, FMCG, auto and pharma stocks offsetting gains in realty and banking shares. The Sensex fell 417.49 points, or 0.55 per cent, to 76,152.86, while the Nifty declined 41 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 23,873.45. Both indices had opened firm and risen more than 350 points intraday, with the Nifty briefly reclaiming 24,000, before selling pressure pulled them into negative territory by the close.
