Mumbai, May 29: Compressed natural gas prices remained unchanged across all major Indian cities on Friday, May 29, marking the second consecutive session of stability after a fortnight of sharp and successive revisions driven by the disruption to global energy markets caused by the US-Iran conflict.

The pause comes as global crude oil prices have shown signs of easing on reports of a preliminary ceasefire extension agreement between Washington and Tehran that, if formalised, could reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and meaningfully reduce the energy supply premium baked into commodity prices.

In Delhi and the NCR, CNG continues to retail at ₹83.09 per kg — the level it has held since the last revision, which itself represented a cumulative hike of ₹6.00 per kg since May 15. Mumbai holds at ₹84.00 per kg after absorbing a ₹3.00 cumulative increase over the same period, making it marginally more expensive than the capital on a per-kg basis.

Hyderabad remains the joint-most expensive major city at ₹97.00 per kg with no revision on Friday, a level it shares with Firozabad and Mathura — both of which absorbed cumulative increases of ₹3.15 and ₹4.00 respectively to reach their current rates.

Among cities that have seen the steepest cumulative increases since May 15, Rewari recorded the sharpest overall climb at ₹5.99 per kg to reach ₹87.70, followed closely by Sonipat at ₹5.90 to ₹92.50 and Bangalore at ₹5.00 to ₹95.00.

Meerut has risen ₹3.65 per kg to ₹89.70, while Chennai and Bharatpur added ₹3.50 and ₹2.50 respectively to reach ₹95.00. Dewas remains the sole outlier, having eased by ₹0.50 per kg to ₹95.50 — the only city in the current dataset to have seen a downward revision in the recent cycle.

The two-session stabilisation in CNG prices reflects the complex interplay of global crude oil volatility and domestic pricing policy. CNG is derived from natural gas, whose price in India is set through a government-administered mechanism that is periodically revised based on international benchmarks and domestic production costs.

The sharp upward revisions of the past fortnight were directly linked to the surge in global energy prices following the US-Iran conflict and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to normal shipping traffic, which pushed Brent crude briefly above $105 per barrel.

Friday’s ceasefire extension reports, which sent Brent toward $93 a barrel, have introduced the possibility that the domestic gas pricing cycle may be approaching a temporary plateau — though industry analysts caution that any formal relaxation in CNG prices will require a sustained decline in international energy benchmarks over multiple pricing review cycles, a scenario that remains contingent on the durability of the US-Iran peace process.
