Mumbai, 26 October 2026: India VIX rose 3.32% to 17.41 by 10:12 a.m. Indian Standard Time (IST) on Monday, as elevated crude oil prices, continuing Middle East tensions, weaker domestic equities and uncertainty ahead of the United States Federal Reserve’s policy decision shaped the opening session. The volatility index opened at 16.86, compared with the previous close of 16.86 in the rounded market snapshot, before climbing to an intraday high of 18.00. Separate historical data recorded an opening level of 16.9825, indicating that the larger increase developed after the opening bell.
India VIX Climbs Towards 18 as Early Trading Volatility Increases
India VIX, which measures the market’s expectation of near-term volatility in the NIFTY 50 based on options prices, moved higher during Monday’s early trading. At 10:12 a.m., the index stood at 17.41, up 0.56 points, or 3.32%, with a reported day range of 16.86–18.00. Its 52-week range was 8.72–28.90, while its year-to-date change was reported at 83.65%.
Historical data showed that India VIX opened at 16.9825, against Friday’s close of 16.8600, an initial increase of approximately 0.73%. It subsequently reached 18.0000, with a later recorded level of 17.8775, up 6.03% from the previous close. Another snapshot at 9:37 a.m. placed the index at 17.86, up 5.93%, while the NIFTY 50 was down 0.74%. The figures represent different capture times and data feeds; they do not establish that the full increase occurred at the opening.
Brent Near $115 Keeps Middle East Supply Risks in Focus
Crude oil remained a significant factor in the early-session market backdrop. Brent crude was reported at around $115 per barrel on Monday after approaching $117 late the previous week. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was trading at approximately $101–$102 per barrel. Although prices had eased from their recent highs, they remained elevated amid concerns about possible supply disruptions linked to continuing tensions in the Middle East.
The region’s geopolitical situation, including reported attacks on Saudi Arabia, remained part of the market’s wider risk assessment. For India, which depends heavily on imported crude, sustained high oil prices can affect import costs, inflation, the rupee and corporate operating expenses. The combination of elevated prices and the possibility of further disruption remained relevant to the domestic market’s opening conditions, although the available information does not quantify oil’s precise contribution to the India VIX increase.
Fed Decision on 28 October Adds to Global Market Uncertainty
The United States Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision, scheduled for 28 October, was another factor in the pre-market environment. Economic reporting indicated that economists broadly expected the central bank to leave rates unchanged at its October meeting, while the possibility of a rate increase in December remained dependent on inflation pressures.
The decision matters for global financial conditions because United States interest rates influence Treasury yields, the dollar and capital flows into emerging markets. Any difference between the Federal Reserve’s decision and market expectations could affect currency and equity-market conditions. However, the October decision had not occurred during India’s opening session, making it an upcoming event rather than a confirmed policy trigger on Monday.
Asian Weakness and Friday’s US Losses Set a Cautious Backdrop
Global equity markets provided limited support before Indian trading began. Asian markets were mixed to weaker, with Japan’s Nikkei and South Korean equities facing pressure. The broad MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan was reported down approximately 0.1%–0.3% across different morning snapshots.
The previous US session had also ended lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.23% on Friday, while the S&P 500 fell 0.52% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.21%. These movements formed part of the external market backdrop entering Monday. Asian performance was not uniformly negative, however, and the available figures do not establish a direct numerical contribution from overseas equities to the India VIX movement.
GIFT Nifty Near 22,600 Signals a Muted Market Opening
Pre-market indicators pointed to a subdued start for Indian equities. GIFT Nifty was reported at 22,608 at 7:46 a.m., while another morning update placed the October 27 contract at 22,599.50 at 7:36 a.m. Both readings were close to the previous NIFTY 50 close of 22,600.
These levels indicated that futures were not signalling a decisive opening rise. The subsequent performance of domestic equities therefore unfolded against the existing combination of oil-price concerns, global market weakness and the approaching Federal Reserve decision. GIFT Nifty’s muted indication was part of the opening context, rather than proof of a particular direction for India VIX.
NIFTY Falls 0.46% as Infosys Guidance Pressures IT Stocks
Indian benchmark indices opened lower at 9:15 a.m. The NIFTY 50 stood at 22,499.30, down 0.46%, while the BSE Sensex declined 0.36% to 72,833.84. IT stocks fell 2.3%, small-cap indices slipped 0.3%, and mid-cap indices declined 0.6%. Overall, 13 of 16 sectors were lower.
Infosys added a company-specific development to the opening session after lowering its annual revenue-growth outlook. The revised guidance reflected weakness in its key North American market and disruption from artificial intelligence in traditional IT services. The company’s shares reportedly fell 3.4% at the opening, while the IT sector recorded one of the steeper declines. These developments coincided with the broader market weakness, but the available information does not establish Infosys as the sole cause of the rise in India VIX.
Rupee at ₹94.94 and Bond Yield at 7.474% Add Context
Currency and bond-market figures provided additional background to the domestic economic environment. The rupee had closed at ₹94.94 per US dollar on Friday, after retreating from a six-week high of ₹94.30. India’s 10-year government bond yield stood at 7.474%, marking its tenth consecutive weekly increase.
These were previous-session figures, not confirmed Monday opening movements. Elevated crude prices can increase demand for dollars to pay for imports, while persistent increases in bond yields can affect borrowing costs and financial valuations. The Federal Reserve’s forthcoming decision also formed part of the external backdrop for currency and bond markets. The available reports do not isolate how much these factors contributed to Monday’s early India VIX increase.
Foreign Flows and Bank Earnings Provide Mixed Domestic Signals
Foreign investment figures presented contrasting timeframes. Foreign investors were reported as net buyers of approximately ₹887 crore–₹890 crore on Friday, 23 October. Separately, reported cumulative figures showed foreign portfolio investor sales of approximately ₹48,056 crore during October up to the reporting cutoff, with year-to-date net outflows exceeding ₹3 lakh crore. These figures describe earlier transactions and do not represent confirmed flows during Monday’s opening.
Positive company results also featured in pre-market reporting. Kotak Mahindra Bank and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories reported better-than-expected quarterly profits. Their results provided company-specific positive developments amid wider market declines, although the opening data showed that benchmark indices remained lower and most sectors were under pressure.
India VIX reached 17.41 by 10:12 a.m., after opening near its previous close and subsequently rising towards 18.00. The early-session backdrop included Brent crude near $115, continuing Middle East risks, weaker domestic benchmarks, Infosys’s revised revenue outlook and the Federal Reserve decision due on 28 October. The reported figures cover the opening and early session, not the full-day close.
