FMCG Stocks Lead Nifty 50 Gainers in Morning Trade; IT and Financials Under Pressure

Mumbai, April 17: Indian equity indices traded mixed in morning trade on Friday as buying was witnessed in select FMCG and consumption stocks while selling was seen in IT and financial counters. Hindustan Unilever, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Consumer Products, ITC, Nestle India and Trent were the top gainers among Nifty 50 stocks at the time of writing, driven by healthy defensive buying and sustained institutional interest.

Gainers

Hindustan Unilever opened at ₹2,142.00 and hit an intraday high of ₹2,240.00. The stock traded at ₹2,226.80, rising 4.10% from its previous close of ₹2,139.10, after touching an intraday low of ₹2,133.00. The Dabur India competitor is the top gainer in early trade.

Shares of Maruti Suzuki zoomed up in early trade. The stock opened at ₹13,300.00 and touched a high of ₹13,647.00. It traded at ₹13,623.00 after touching a low of ₹13,256.00. The stock gained 2.16% from its previous close of ₹13,335.00.

Buying was also seen in Tata Consumer Products stock as it opened at ₹1,098.40 and hit an intraday high of ₹1,126.40. It was trading at ₹1,122.90, up 1.84% from its previous close of ₹1,102.60.

ITC traded between ₹303.85 and ₹309.95 after opening at ₹303.85. The stock traded at ₹308.50, up 1.68% from its previous close of ₹303.40.

Nestle India rose 1.62% while Trent gained 1.61%, highlighting strength in consumption-driven stocks.

Laggards

Shares of Wipro plummeted as it touched a low of ₹202.50 and traded at ₹204.38, down 2.80% against its previous close of ₹210.26. IT stocks remained under pressure. HCL Technologies traded lower by 1.21% at ₹1,432.60 after hitting a low of ₹1,430.00 during the session against its previous closing price of ₹1,450.20. Titan Company traded on the weaker side as it hit an intraday low of ₹4,330.00. The stock traded at ₹4,408.10, down 1.19% against its previous close of ₹4,461.40. Shares of Hindalco Industries also edged lower by 0.83% to ₹1,031.30 after touching a low of ₹1,025.00. HDFC Life Insurance was among the top losers in Nifty 50 stocks as it dipped to ₹606.20 during the session. The stock traded at ₹613.00, down 2.93% from its previous close of ₹631.50.

Market Update

Market sentiment was cautious in early trade as FMCG and consumption stocks held up well while selling continued in IT and financial counters weighing on the indices. Investors are likely to remain selective ahead as they track global cues.
