Mumbai, October 26: Indian equity benchmark indices rebounded on Monday, snapping a four-session losing streak as buying in pharmaceutical, metal and oil and gas stocks lifted sentiment, despite persistent concerns over elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Sensex rose 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75, while the Nifty 50 gained 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to settle at 22,753.20.
The recovery came after the benchmarks declined in each of the previous four sessions, with the Nifty and Sensex losing 2.36% and 2.15%, respectively, last week. Rising oil prices and concerns over their impact on inflation continued to weigh on sentiment, while investors also turned their attention to the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision later this week.
Brent crude traded around $114.50 a barrel on Monday, easing from a near six-month high of $117, although attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group on Saudi Arabia kept supply-disruption risks in focus. Investors are also assessing the implications of a potentially hawkish Fed outlook for emerging-market capital flows, as higher US interest rates could strengthen the dollar and reduce the appeal of Indian equities.
Market breadth was positive, with 2,262 stocks advancing, 1,895 declining and 186 remaining unchanged. The recovery extended to broader markets, with the Nifty Midcap index rising 1.2% and the Nifty Smallcap index gaining 1.4%.
Dr Reddy’s, BSE, JSW Steel lead Nifty gainers
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories led the Nifty 50 gainers, rising 6.6%, followed by JSW Steel which climbed 6.3%.
BSE Ltd advanced 4%. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone climbed 2.9% while Eternal rose 2.6%. Max Healthcare gained 2.4%.
On the other hand, Shriram Finance was the biggest laggard, falling 4.6%. Tata Consumer Products declined 2.8%, while Bajaj Finance slipped 1.1%.
Pharma, metal and oil and gas stocks drive recovery
Most sectoral indices ended in positive territory, with FMCG, media and consumer durables being the exceptions. The Nifty Metal index gained 2.2%, while the Nifty Pharma index rose 1.8%. Oil and gas stocks also advanced 1.3%, helping support the broader market recovery.
Infrastructure, IT, private banking and energy stocks gained around 0.5% each. The strength in pharmaceutical and metal shares helped offset weakness in select consumer-facing stocks.
Rupee weakens against US dollar
The Indian rupee ended 25 paise lower at 95.19 against the US dollar, compared with its previous close of 94.94. Elevated crude oil prices and external uncertainties continued to weigh on the currency, keeping attention on India’s import bill and inflation outlook.
Investors will now track movements in crude oil prices, the Fed’s policy decision and guidance, foreign institutional investor flows and the ongoing September-quarter earnings season for fresh direction.
