Mumbai, September 23, 2025: The Indian stock market and included indices are expected to open flat, or on a muted note today. The flat and muted opening is indicated by Gift Nifty, which is trading 0.19%, or 47.50 points, and is currently trading at 25,257.50, as of 8:30 AM.

Sensex and Nifty Closed Lower

Yesterday, on September 22, both Sensex and Nifty ended the trading session in the red. Sensex fell 466.26 points or 0.56% to close at 82,159.97, while the Nifty 50 fell 124.70 points or 0.49% to settle at 25,202.35. The midcap and smallcap indices also saw losses, and slipped by around 0.7%. IT stocks were the biggest losers as they saw negative investor sentiment due to the recently announced $1,00,000 fee for H-1B visa by the US. This was the second straight day of losses for the Indian market.

Asian Markets Higher While The Dollar Index Flat

Asian markets are trading higher today, with a positive opening. They are being supported by gains in Wall Street overnight, as in the US there is strong investor demand for IT stocks after the H-1B visa fee announcement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.14%, the S&P 500 gained 0.44%, and the Nasdaq Composite surged 0.70%.

The 10-year treasury yield also increased by 2 basis points to 4.14%, while the 2-year yield gained 3 basis points to 3.6%. The US dollar index traded flat, as investors are waiting for more signals from the Federal Reserve. Crude oil prices were majorly unchanged.

FIIs Net Buyers Supported By DIIs

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) became net buyers after a two day selling streak and sold Indian equities worth ₹2,910 crore on September 22. FIIs were supported by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) who bought Indian equities worth ₹2,582 crore.

Soft Start Expected

As the Gift Nifty is trading lower, the Indian market is set for a soft or a flat start. The IT sector is the most concerning, as it may see further selloffs. Investors will be keenly looking at intraday factors and global signals for the trading session today.
