Mumbai, April 16: Global markets are flashing a synchronised green signal, setting up Indian equities for a firm and optimistic start, as strength ripples from Wall Street through Asia and holds steady across Europe.

The tone was set overnight in the United States, where benchmark indices rallied strongly, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq climbing to fresh record highs. The S&P settled at 7,022.95, up 0.8%, surpassing its previous closing high in January. It also hit a new intraday record of 7,026.24.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.6% to hit a fresh intraday high above 24,020 points, eclipsing its previous peak of 24,019.99 set on October 29. The index also crossed its closing high set the same day.

Robust Earnings

Investor sentiment has been buoyed by robust corporate earnings—particularly from major banks—which have helped reinforce confidence in the resilience of the world’s largest economy. At the same time, easing geopolitical tensions, especially in the Middle East, have cooled risk aversion, allowing markets to refocus on growth and fundamentals. Futures trading indicates that this positive momentum is likely to persist.

Asian markets have taken the baton and accelerated the rally. Equity benchmarks across the region are trading higher, with Japan’s Nikkei scaling record levels and the broader MSCI Asia-Pacific index advancing over 1 percent. The rally in Asia is being driven by a combination of factors: the strong lead from Wall Street, signs of economic resilience in China, and easing geopolitical concerns. China’s latest economic data has come in stronger than expected, lending further confidence to investors that growth in the region remains on track.

Macro Backdrop

The macro backdrop is also turning increasingly favourable. Oil prices have stabilised after recent volatility, the US dollar remains steady, and global bond yields are not flashing immediate alarm signals. This alignment of factors—firm earnings, easing geopolitical stress, and macro stability—creates a conducive environment for equities, particularly in emerging markets.

For Indian markets, the message from global peers is clear and compelling. With Wall Street at record highs, Asia firmly in the green, and Europe stable, Dalal Street is poised to open on a strong footing. The confluence of these global tailwinds suggests that early trade could see bullish momentum, with investor sentiment likely to remain upbeat as the session unfolds.
