Mumbai, May 4: Gold prices in India edged higher on Monday, May 4, snapping a three-session losing run that had seen the precious metal shed ground steadily through the back half of last week. The national benchmark for 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) rose to ₹15,093 per gram — or ₹1,50,930 for 10 grams — up ₹270 per 10 grams from Thursday’s closing rate of ₹1,50,660. The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) moved up to ₹13,835 per gram, translating to ₹1,38,350 for 10 grams, a gain of ₹250 per 10 grams over Thursday’s ₹1,38,100. The 18-karat rate (75% purity) climbed to ₹11,320 per gram, or ₹1,13,200 for 10 grams, rising ₹210 per 10 grams from Thursday’s ₹1,12,990.
The modest recovery comes amid a partial softening in crude oil prices following Trump’s Hormuz shipping initiative, which reduced some of the macro uncertainty that had paradoxically been weighing on safe-haven demand in recent sessions.
City-Wise Gold Prices – South, East and West
Chennai continues to command the highest gold prices among India’s major cities, with 10 grams of 24-karat gold priced at ₹1,52,730 — a premium of ₹1,800 over the national benchmark — while 22-karat and 18-karat gold are quoted at ₹1,40,000 and ₹1,16,800 respectively, reflecting the city’s traditionally stronger jewellery demand and local association markups. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune all align uniformly with the national benchmark at ₹1,50,930 for 24-karat, ₹1,38,350 for 22-karat and ₹1,13,200 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, with no local price divergence across these six markets — a pattern consistent with recent weeks.
City-Wise Gold Prices – North and West
Delhi quotes ₹1,51,130 for 24-karat, ₹1,38,500 for 22-karat and ₹1,13,500 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams — a ₹200 premium over the national benchmark on the top purity, largely unchanged from Thursday’s differential. Ahmedabad and Vadodara both track marginally above the national rate, quoting ₹1,51,030 for 24-karat, ₹1,38,400 for 22-karat and ₹1,13,300 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, with a consistent ₹100 premium over the benchmark that reflects Gujarat’s localised jewellers’ association pricing norms and has remained stable through the week.
The recovery drew its cues from Trump’s weekend declaration that the U.S. military — backed by guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, and 15,000 troops — would begin facilitating the movement of commercial shipping through the Hormuz strait, which has been effectively closed since the U.S.-Iran conflict erupted on February 28.
