Mumbai, May 5: Gold prices in India retreated on Tuesday, giving back a portion of Monday’s recovery as a firming dollar and easing global risk sentiment weighed on the precious metal. The national benchmark for 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) fell to ₹1,49,180 for 10 grams — a decline of ₹1,750 from Monday’s rate of ₹1,50,930. The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) slipped to ₹1,36,750 for 10 grams, down ₹1,600 from Monday’s ₹1,38,350. The 18-karat rate (75% purity) eased to ₹1,11,890 for 10 grams, a drop of ₹1,310 from Monday’s ₹1,13,200. At the per-gram level, 24K gold stands at ₹14,918, 22K at ₹13,675, and 18K at ₹11,189, with all three purities recording their second pullback in four sessions.

The softening follows Monday’s brief rebound, which had snapped a three-session losing run. Dealers and analysts attributed Tuesday’s pressure to a marginal strengthening of the U.S. dollar index amid recalibrated expectations around Federal Reserve policy, which typically moves inversely to gold prices. Domestic demand, while seasonally supported by the tail end of the wedding season, was unable to offset the international headwinds, leaving spot prices lower across the board by mid-session.

City-Wise Gold Prices — South, East and West

Chennai continues to hold the highest gold rates among India’s major cities, with 10 grams of 24-karat gold quoted at ₹1,50,770 — a premium of ₹1,590 over the national benchmark — while 22-karat and 18-karat gold are priced at ₹1,38,200 and ₹1,11,890 respectively. The city’s traditionally elevated rates reflect stronger jewellery demand and localised association markups that persist regardless of national price direction. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune all align uniformly at ₹1,49,180 for 24-karat, ₹1,36,750 for 22-karat and ₹1,11,890 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, with no local premium recorded in any of these six markets — a pattern that has been consistent over recent weeks, reflecting tightly harmonised pricing among bullion dealers in these cities.

City-Wise Gold Prices — North and West

Delhi quotes 10 grams of 24-karat gold at ₹1,49,230, with 22-karat at ₹1,36,900 and 18-karat at ₹1,12,040 — a marginal ₹50 premium over the national benchmark on the top purity, broadly unchanged from Monday’s differential. Ahmedabad and Vadodara both track at ₹1,49,230 for 24-karat, ₹1,36,800 for 22-karat and ₹1,11,940 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams. The Gujarat cities’ consistent ₹50 premium above the national benchmark reflects localised jewellers’ association pricing norms that have remained stable through the week, unaffected by the directional move in national rates.
