New Delhi, Oct 29: Gold prices held steady on Thursday, pausing after three straight daily gains. Ten grams of 24-carat (99.9% purity) gold costs Rs 1,43,950 in most cities, according to Goodreturns.in. The price of 10 grams of 22-carat (91.6% purity) gold is Rs 1,31,950, while 18-carat (75% purity) gold sells at Rs 1,07,960. These are bullion rates and do not include taxes or making charges.

The rates are identical to Wednesday’s, when 10 grams of 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold rose by Rs 660, Rs 600 and Rs 390, respectively, in the Mumbai cluster of cities. Traders also have the US Federal Reserve’s decision to digest: it left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday, a month after raising them by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%.

On a per-gram basis, 24-carat gold is at Rs 14,395, 22-carat at Rs 13,195 and 18-carat at Rs 10,796. Buyers pay the same as on Wednesday, but Rs 66, Rs 60 and Rs 39 more per gram than on Tuesday.

For bulk buyers, one kilogram of 24-carat gold costs Rs 1,43,95,000, while 22-carat and 18-carat gold cost Rs 1,31,95,000 and Rs 1,07,96,000, respectively.

Gold has now added Rs 1,200 per 10 grams since Monday, October 26, when it stood at Rs 1,42,750, a rise of about 0.84%. It is still Rs 3,490 below the Rs 1,47,440 it fetched on Friday, October 16, and Rs 7,030 below the Rs 1,50,980 of Monday, October 12, a fall of about 4.66%. That gap did not narrow today.

Delhi continues to be the costliest city, with 10 grams of 24-carat gold at Rs 1,44,100. This is Rs 150 more than the Rs 1,43,950 charged in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune. The 22-carat and 18-carat rates show the same Rs 150 premium, at Rs 1,32,100 and Rs 1,08,110. Vadodara and Ahmedabad have 24-carat gold at Rs 1,44,000, Rs 50 above the Mumbai cluster, with 22-carat at Rs 1,32,000 and 18-carat at Rs 1,08,010. Chennai’s 18-carat price remains level with the Mumbai cluster at Rs 1,07,960. All of these gaps are unchanged from Wednesday.

With no city seeing a change, the Diff column reads zero throughout, in contrast with Wednesday, when 24K and 22K gold rose by the same amount in every city and 18K gained between ₹390 and ₹490.

These are bullion rates. Jewellery will cost more once making charges, wastage charges and 3% GST are added. GST alone comes to about ₹4,319 on a 10-gram purchase of 24K gold at today’s rate, and about ₹3,959 on 22K and ₹3,239 on 18K for the same weight.

With Dhanteras and Diwali drawing closer, buyers will be watching whether gold can resume its climb after the slide from the October 12 peak. At ₹1,43,950 per 10 grams, 50 grams of 24K gold costs ₹7,19,750 before making charges and GST.

Kalyan Jewellers India opened at ₹510.00, the same as its previous close, and dipped to a low of ₹502.50, 1.47 per cent below that level. Buyers then took charge and pushed the stock to a high of ₹522.90, 2.53 per cent above the previous close. It is at ₹520.00, up ₹10.00 or 1.96 per cent, and above its volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of ₹515.56.

Thangamayil Jewellery opened at ₹4,681.00 against a previous close of ₹4,680.50 and touched a high of ₹4,681.50 right away. Selling followed, and the stock fell to a low of ₹4,570.00, 2.36 per cent below the previous close. It is trading at ₹4,616.00, down ₹64.50 or 1.38 per cent, and just above its VWAP of ₹4,613.18. The fall comes on top of Wednesday’s decline of about 1.7 per cent.

PC Jeweller opened at ₹15.86 against a previous close of ₹15.80 and touched a high of ₹16.06. It dipped to a low of ₹15.70, 0.63 per cent below the previous close, before recovering to ₹15.92, up ₹0.12 or 0.76 per cent. The stock is above its VWAP of ₹15.89. Wednesday’s close of ₹15.80 was 5.11 per cent below Tuesday’s ₹16.65.

Gold stood still on Thursday, yet three of the four jewellery counters rose and all three beat a Nifty 50 that was up 0.48 per cent. Thangamayil Jewellery was the only decliner. It is a reversal from Wednesday, when three of the four counters fell.

Order book data leaned towards buyers. They led on Kalyan Jewellers India at 58.38 per cent, with 4,42,482 shares against 3,15,509 on the sell side, on Titan at 59.90 per cent, with 65,503 shares against 43,854, and on Thangamayil Jewellery at 52.35 per cent, with 5,097 shares against 4,640. Sellers were ahead only on PC Jeweller at 58.63 per cent, with 4,32,49,224 shares against 3,05,21,576.

The rupee is another factor to watch. USD/INR futures for the November 26 contract were quoted at ₹95.50 around 10:16 am, and a weaker rupee tends to make imported gold costlier in domestic terms.
