Mumbai, May 26: Gold prices in India fell for a second consecutive session on Tuesday, extending Monday’s modest correction as selling pressure continued to weigh on the metal amid a firming US dollar and easing of some global risk-off sentiment. The national price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) declined to ₹1,58,890 per 10 grams, shedding ₹490 from Monday’s ₹1,59,380.
The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) eased to ₹1,45,650 per 10 grams, down ₹450 from Monday’s ₹1,46,100. The 18-karat price (75% purity) slipped to ₹1,19,170 per 10 grams, retreating ₹370 from Monday’s ₹1,19,540. On a per-gram basis, 24K gold now stands at ₹15,889, 22K at ₹14,565 and 18K at ₹11,917.
Tuesday’s ₹490 decline in 24K is the largest single-session drop since the post-tariff correction ran its course, and marks a modest acceleration from Monday’s ₹110 slip, suggesting that the consolidation range the metal had established over the previous week may be giving way to a fresh leg lower. The two-session decline has erased ₹600 per 10 grams in 24K from Friday’s close of ₹1,59,490, unwinding a portion of the ₹3,710 recovered during last week’s three-session rally.
Globally, a somewhat firmer US dollar following mixed US economic data weighed on dollar-denominated gold, while some easing of immediate geopolitical risk premiums as West Asia ceasefire diplomacy showed tentative signs of life also reduced safe-haven buying. Domestically, the ongoing adjustment to higher fuel costs following four consecutive price hikes since May 15 continues to keep consumer and institutional risk appetite subdued, compressing discretionary spending on gold at the retail level.
City-Wise Gold Rates: Southern and Western India
Chennai retained its position as India’s most expensive gold market on Tuesday, quoting 24-karat gold at ₹1,60,690 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,47,300 and 18-karat at ₹1,23,600 declining by ₹550, ₹500 and ₹400 respectively from Monday’s levels, a slightly steeper fall than the national benchmark that reflects some demand-side softening in the southern market. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune were all uniformly pegged at the national benchmark of ₹1,58,890 for 24-karat, ₹1,45,650 for 22-karat and ₹1,19,170 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, each declining by the standard ₹490, ₹450 and ₹370 from Monday’s close.
Delhi quoted 24-karat gold at ₹1,59,040 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,45,800 and 18-karat at ₹1,19,320 on Tuesday down ₹490, ₹450 and ₹320 respectively from Monday, maintaining its characteristic marginal premium above the national benchmark. Vadodara and Ahmedabad were both quoted at ₹1,58,940 for 24-karat, ₹1,45,700 for 22-karat and ₹1,19,220 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, each declining by ₹490, ₹450 and ₹370 from Monday in line with the national benchmark cities.
Across all cities, Tuesday’s declines moved in near-uniform lockstep with Chennai recording the only slight deviation confirming that Tuesday’s correction is nationally driven rather than the result of any city-specific supply or demand pressure.
