The Indian Ministry of Mines has proposed benchmarking domestic iron ore (60-62% Fe Fines) against internationally recognised benchmarks such as S&P Global Platts or similar reputed indices. This move will help replace the existing legacy mechanisms under which mining firms self‑declare sale prices, which the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) then uses to determine the average sale price (ASP).

The Need for Change

The existing system is largely inconsistent because it lets companies underreport prices, especially higher‑grade ore, reducing state royalty payments. This lack of transparency also produced inconsistent ASPs across different states.

New Mechanism and Methodology

As per the new methodology, IBM will compute a daily reference price in INR for 60–62% Fe fines based on Platts or equivalent global indices for ores of comparable grade. These values will serve as the official price benchmarks.

Impact of the New Mechanism

Royalties shall be calculated on the benchmarked prices, thereby reducing ambiguity. This is expected to bolster state revenues and ensure fair distribution to mining‑affected communities.

Overall, this step is critical to achieving enhanced transparency, uniform prices, and better revenue realisation, which will further help local development.
