New Delhi, July 3, 2025 – India and the United States have agreed to sign a new 10-year defence framework agreement, marking a significant step forward in their evolving strategic partnership. The development follows a phone conversation between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, according to the Pentagon.

The statement from the Pentagon confirmed that both leaders have committed to signing the next US-India Defence Framework during their upcoming in-person meeting later this year. The renewed framework will shape bilateral defence cooperation over the next decade, reinforcing long-term military collaboration.

The Nifty India Defence index traded at 8,883.40 as of 12:43 PM, reflecting a 0.22% intraday rise.

Focus on Defence Sales and Industrial Cooperation

During their discussion, Singh and Hegseth addressed several key issues, including pending major US defence sales to India and the importance of deepening defence industrial cooperation. These conversations come amid ongoing efforts to bolster India’s domestic defence manufacturing capabilities under its “Make in India” initiative.

Push for Indigenous Jet Engine Production

A significant focus of the call was on the delivery delays of GE Aerospace’s F404 engines, which are crucial for powering the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft. The delays have impacted Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)’s ability to meet delivery schedules for the Indian Air Force.

Singh also pressed for early finalisation of a proposed agreement between HAL and GE Aerospace for the joint production of F414 engines in India. The collaboration is expected to enhance India’s indigenous defence production capabilities and reduce dependence on imports.

Reviewing Progress Since Trump-Modi Joint Statement

Both sides acknowledged the progress made since the February 2025 joint statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump. Singh and Hegseth committed to accelerating cooperation across multiple dimensions, including:

  • Integration of defence industrial supply chains
  • Enhanced interoperability
  • Logistics sharing
  • Increased joint military exercises
  • Collaboration with like-minded global partners

The renewed commitment to a robust and comprehensive defence relationship reflects the strategic importance both nations place on their security partnership in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Outlook

The announcement of a renewed long-term defence framework between India and the US has reinforced investor confidence in the defence sector. With a focus on joint production and deeper industrial ties, the market anticipates stronger momentum in indigenous manufacturing and defence-related equities.
