Mumbai, 14 October 2026: India VIX rose by 0.48 points, or 3.4%, to 14.64 on Wednesday, reflecting a rise in the volatility index during the trading session. The index opened at 14.12, matching its previous close, before moving between an intraday low of 13.79 and a high of 15.01. Elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical developments in the Middle East, continued foreign investor selling and weakness in benchmark indices remained key developments affecting the Indian market during the day.

India VIX Rises 3.4% as Trading Range Widens

India VIX stood at 14.64 at 3:42 pm IST on 14 October 2026, up 0.48 points from its previous close of 14.12. The index recorded a day range of 13.79–15.01, while its 52-week range remained between 8.72 and 28.90. Its year-to-date return stood at 54.75%.

The index measures expected near-term volatility in the Nifty 50 based on options prices. Its increase on Wednesday came as domestic equities faced pressure from rising crude oil prices, foreign investor outflows and uncertainty surrounding global developments. India VIX had declined by approximately 7.49% on 13 October, before rising during Wednesday’s session.

Crude Oil Above $100 Raises Supply Concerns

International crude oil prices remained elevated, with Brent crude reported around $106–$107 per barrel during Wednesday’s market coverage. Developments in the Middle East, including reported attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi militants and continued threats to commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz, kept attention on potential disruptions to energy supplies.

Reports also highlighted developments involving Saudi Aramco and concerns about changing tactics affecting shipping routes. The possibility of further escalation remained a key issue for oil markets.

India’s dependence on imported crude oil makes international price movements relevant to its import bill, inflation outlook and currency market. Higher energy costs can also affect fuel-sensitive sectors, including aviation and logistics, while influencing operating expenses across other industries. The elevated crude price environment remained a significant external factor during Wednesday’s session.

Foreign Investor Selling Continues to Weigh on Equities

Foreign institutional investor (FII) selling remained a concern for Indian equities on 14 October. The selling streak had extended to 13 consecutive sessions, while reported year-to-date outflows reached $32.52 billion.

The market also continued to contend with the effects of foreign selling reported during the previous session. FIIs had sold approximately ₹1,305 crore worth of equities on 13 October, adding to concerns about the sustainability of the previous day’s recovery.

Foreign outflows remained part of the broader market backdrop alongside elevated oil prices and uncertainty over global interest rates. The developments coincided with the rise in India VIX, although the available information does not establish a precise contribution from foreign selling to the index’s daily movement.

Profit-Booking Pushes Nifty Below 22,700

Indian equities struggled to sustain the previous session’s gains on Wednesday. On 13 October, the Sensex had risen 1.54% to 73,033.78, while the Nifty 50 advanced 1.60% to 22,721.95. The recovery had been supported by gains in information technology shares.

During Wednesday’s morning session, the benchmarks surrendered early gains. The Sensex fell approximately 250 points from its intraday high, while the Nifty slipped below 22,700. At around 11:33 am IST, the Nifty was reported at 22,676.40, down 0.20%.

The 22,750 level remained an important technical threshold identified by analysts for a sustained recovery. The index’s inability to maintain its early gains coincided with rising crude prices and continued foreign selling.

Mixed Sectoral Performance Limits Market Direction

Market performance varied across sectors on 14 October. The information technology index advanced approximately 1.2% during the morning session, extending gains following the previous day’s earnings-led recovery. However, eight of the 16 major sectors tracked in the reported market snapshot were lower, while the broader mid-cap and small-cap indices remained largely unchanged.

Selected stocks recorded company-specific movements. Zydus Lifesciences declined following US regulatory observations, while Tata Elxsi rose amid earnings-related developments. The divergence between technology shares and other sectors left the broader market without a uniform direction.

The IT sector’s performance provided support to selected stocks, while weakness elsewhere reflected the mixed conditions prevailing across the market.

Rupee Rises to ₹94.91 After RBI Measures

The Indian rupee strengthened to approximately ₹94.91 against the US dollar, reaching a one-month high and appreciating around 0.4% during Wednesday’s session. The movement followed Reserve Bank of India (RBI) measures aimed at curbing speculative currency activity and supporting orderly market conditions.

The measures included changes affecting oil-related dollar demand, currency-hedging compliance and margin requirements for certain importer and bank hedging activities. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra indicated that further steps could be considered if required.

However, government bonds faced pressure. The 10-year government bond yield rose by 10 basis points to approximately 7.40%, amid elevated crude oil prices and the RBI governor’s remarks. Market pricing also reflected expectations of tighter monetary conditions over the following year.

US Inflation and Global Markets Add to Uncertainty

Global developments remained relevant to Indian equities as investors awaited US September consumer price inflation data on Wednesday. Market expectations placed annual inflation at approximately 3.6%, with energy prices remaining an important consideration.

The inflation release was being monitored for its implications for Federal Reserve policy and global financial conditions. Changes in US interest-rate expectations can affect currency movements, foreign portfolio flows and equity valuations in emerging markets.

Asian equities delivered mixed results on 14 October. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell less than 0.1%, Australia’s ASX 200 declined 0.6%, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.4%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped less than 0.1%, and the Shanghai Composite dropped nearly 0.9%.

US markets had also ended the previous session slightly lower, with the S&P 500 falling less than 0.1%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite losing 0.2%. Meanwhile, the US 10-year Treasury yield was reported around 5.2%, near a two-week low, as investors awaited the inflation release.

Global technology shares showed pockets of strength, including gains among some Asian chipmakers and European technology stocks. The STOXX 600 rose 0.4%, while the MSCI All-World index gained 0.1% during the reported period. These mixed international developments formed part of the wider market backdrop.

India VIX rose 3.4% to 14.64 on 14 October, moving within a 13.79–15.01 range. Elevated crude oil prices, Middle East supply concerns, continued foreign investor outflows and weakness in benchmark indices were key developments during the session. The rupee’s appreciation and gains in IT shares provided contrasting movements, while global inflation and monetary-policy developments remained in focus.
