Indian equity markets ended the day in red today, 16th May, 2025. Nifty 50 closed the day, down by 42.30 points or 0.17%. Sensex closed the day, down by 200.15 points or 0.24%. Top gainers today at Nifty 50 were BEL, Tata Consumer, Bajaj Auto. Top losers today at Nifty 50 were Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies and Infosys.

Most Asian Markets Ended the Day in Red

Most Asian markets ended the day in red today. Nikkei 225 ended the day today, down by 1.79 points. Hang Seng ended the day, down by 108.11 points or 0.46%. Shanghai composite index ended the day, down by 13.36 points or 0.40%. South Korean KOSPI ended the day, up by 5.51 points or 0.21%.

BEL’s Stock Continued to Gain

BEL’s stock continued to gain on the news that its anti-drone system was used by Indian defense forces during Operation Sindoor. Bajaj Auto shares also gained today. News came that its international subsidiary Bajaj International Holdings BV has invested 50 million Euros in convertible bonds of Pierer Bajaj AG. Pierer Bajaj is the parent company of Pierer Mobility, which in turn is the parent company of KTM AG. This funding was necessary to help KTM fight off bankruptcy.

Bharti Airtel’s shares fell today after Singtel announced that it has sold its 1.2% stake in the company for $1.54 billion. HCL Technologies shares fell after President Trump’s statement that Apple should not shift its manufacturing to India. Just a day earlier Union Cabinet had given its approval for HCL- Foxconn’s proposed mobile panel chip manufacturing facility. Foxconn is the biggest contract manufacturer for Apple.

All the broader market indices ended the day in green at NSE. Nifty Private Bank Index was the top gainer today among sectoral indices. It gained 1.63% during the day. Nifty IT index was the top loser. It lost 0.84% during the day.

Market Breadth Remained Positive Today

Market breadth was again positive today. 1969 stocks gained at NSE, 911 stocks declined and 91 stocks remained unchanged. 57 stocks touched new 52-week high at NSE today. 8 stocks touched new 52-week low.
