Mumbai, September 2: Indian shares crashed at pre open signalling a very negative start for benchmarks as oil spiked after Iran and US exchanged attacks and shares across the globe fell.
Nifty 50 declined 0.87% and Sensex fell 0.74% at pre open.
Indian equities extended their decline for a second straight session as weak global sentiment overshadowed stronger-than-expected domestic economic growth data.
Gland Pharma will be on investors’ radar after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration completed an inspection of the drugmaker’s Visakhapatnam facilities without issuing any observations.
Coal India is set to remain in focus after its unit Mahanadi Coalfields filed draft papers for an initial public offering. Coal India plans to sell a 10% stake in the subsidiary through the IPO, according to the filings.
EMS could see action after the engineering company won an order worth Rs 219 crore ($23 million).
Ujjivan Small Finance Bank will also be watched after CEO Sanjeev Nautiyal resigned citing health reasons. The Reserve Bank of India has approved executive director Carol Furtado’s appointment as interim CEO, effective September 1.
Asian Stocks Extend Global Selloff
Asian markets came under heavy pressure in early trade, with MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan down 1.6%.
South Korea’s KOSPI dropped 3%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 2.6%, as investors moved away from riskier assets amid rising geopolitical tensions and higher energy prices.
The selloff reflected growing concerns that a sustained increase in oil prices could reignite inflationary pressures and complicate the outlook for global interest rates.
Wall Street Starts September On Weak Footing
U.S. equities also ended lower in the first session of September, with higher Treasury yields and rising crude prices weighing on investor sentiment.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.79%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.71% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.03%.
Energy stocks were among the few gainers, benefiting from higher crude prices, while consumer discretionary and semiconductor stocks came under pressure.
Brent Tops $95 On Supply Concerns
Oil prices remained at the centre of investor concerns. Brent crude rose 0.87% to $95.47 a barrel in Asian trade on Wednesday, after touching a five-week high on Tuesday following the latest U.S. strikes on Iran.
Markets are increasingly focused on the risk of disruptions to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies. Any prolonged disruption could send crude prices higher and add to inflationary pressures worldwide.
Rising Yields Add To Market Anxiety
The surge in oil prices has also clouded the outlook for global monetary policy. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.8122%, its highest level in almost three years.
Markets have raised their expectations of tighter monetary policy, with fed funds futures now pricing in roughly a 67% probability of a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate hike this month, up from about 40% a week ago.
Higher yields alongside elevated crude prices could weigh particularly heavily on emerging markets by supporting the dollar, tightening global financial conditions and reducing the appeal of risk assets.
