As expected, Indian equity markets saw a sharp decline today, 26th September, 2025. Nifty 50 ended the day, down by 236.15 points or 0.95%. Sensex ended the day, down by 733.22 points or 0.90%.

Top gainers & losers

Top 3 gainers at Nifty 50 today were Larsen & Toubro (LT), Tata Motors and ITC. Top 3 losers were IndusInd Bank, M&M and Tata Steel. Just six of the 50 stocks that make up Nifty 50 ended the day in green. The remaining 44 stocks ended the day in red.

Markets got a jolt right at the beginning of the day. The news came that US has imposed 100% import tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical products. New tariffs were also imposed on kitchen appliances, upholstered furniture etc.

All the broad & sectoral indices ended the day in red

The extent of the market decline today is reflected in all the broad market indices ending the day in red. Nifty small cap 100 index was the top loser among broad market indices. It ended the day, down by 2.26%.

All the sectoral indices also ended the day in red today. Nifty Mid-small IT & Telecom index was the top loser today. It ended the day, down by 3.33%. Broad based selling in IT and software stocks continued today. Nifty Pharma index ended the day, down by 2.14%.

Market breadth extremely negative; volatility jumps

Market breadth was extremely negative today. At NSE, 627 stocks gained. 2423 stocks declined. 139 stocks touched 52-week lows today. 50 stocks touched 52-week highs. Market volatility jumped sharply by 5.95%.
