Mumbai, July 20: Kotak Mahindra Bank share price fell as much as 3% on Monday after the private lender reported June-quarter earnings that highlighted pressure on net interest margins (NIMs). Despite the market reaction, several brokerages retained their positive stance on the stock, citing healthy loan growth, stable asset quality and an improving long-term outlook.

Kotak Mahindra Bank reported a 26% year-on-year rise in standalone net profit for the June quarter at Rs 4,123 crore, supported by steady growth in advances. However, investors focused on the sequential decline in the bank’s NIM. As of writing the stock was down 2% at Rs 382.30.

Margins Weigh On Sentiment

The lender’s net interest margin came under pressure during the quarter. Brokerages expect net interest margins to improve gradually as the mix of unsecured and commercial loans increases. They also believe the unsecured loan book has largely stabilised, and credit costs should remain under control. While loan growth remained healthy, analysts noted that margin compression overshadowed the performance, triggering selling.

Brokerages noted that loan growth moderated slightly to 15% year-on-year in the June quarter. The SME portfolio remained the key growth driver, expanding 20%, followed by 15% growth in corporate lending. Retail loans rose 12%, while the commercial vehicle and tractor loan segment recorded 7% growth.

The margin pressure mirrors a broader trend across private-sector banks, with investors increasingly focusing on profitability rather than credit growth alone.

Brokerages Remain Constructive

Despite the near-term concerns, brokerages largely maintained their bullish recommendations on Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Analysts said the bank continues to benefit from a strong liability franchise, healthy capital position and resilient asset quality. They expect margins to gradually recover as funding costs stabilise and believe the lender is well placed to deliver sustainable earnings growth over the medium term.

Brokerages also highlighted Kotak’s conservative underwriting standards and diversified lending portfolio, which they believe should help the bank navigate a challenging interest-rate environment better than many peers.

Key Monitorables

Going forward, investors will closely track the bank’s ability to improve margins, accelerate deposit mobilisation and sustain loan growth without compromising asset quality.

Management commentary on funding costs, retail deposit growth and credit demand will remain key triggers for the stock. While margin pressure may persist over the next few quarters, analysts believe Kotak Mahindra Bank’s strong fundamentals and disciplined execution continue to support its long-term investment case.
