Market commentary: Indian equity markets saw broad-based selling today

Indian equity markets ended the day in red today, 2nd July, 2025. Nifty 50 ended the day, down by 88.40 points or 0.35%. Sensex ended the day, down by 287.60 points or 0.34%.
Top gainers & losers
Top 3 gainers at Nifty 50 today were Tata Steel, JSW Steel and Asian Paint. Top 3 losers were Shriram Finance, HDFC Life, and IndusInd Bank. Metal stocks gained today. Asian Paint gained after a brokerage firm increased its target price for the stock. Shriram Finance’s stock continued to see profit booking. IndusInd Bank’s stock price fell after a brokerage firm gave Sell rating on the stock.
All the broader market indices ended the day in red
All the broader market indices at NSE ended the day in red. Stocks of public sector banks saw some selling and profit booking today. Nifty Financial Services 25/50 Index was the top loser today, among sectoral indices. It ended the day, down by 1,09%. Nifty consumer durables index was the top gainer among sectoral indices . It ended the day, up by 1.04%.
Market breadth negative
Market breadth turned very negative today. 1205 stocks advanced today. 1720 stocks declined. 103 stocks remained unchanged. 65 stocks touched 52-week high levels today. 36 stocks touched their 52-week lows.
Markets continue to be plagued by uncertainty related to US tariffs. US President Donald Trump once again said that India and US will soon strike a trade deal with much lower tariffs. But according to reports some resistance is being shown by Indian government, in the ongoing negotiations, on the issue of reducing barriers to agricultural imports from USA.
