Market commentary: Markets end the day in red

Indian equity markets ended the day in red today, 9^th July, 2025. Nifty 50 ended, down by 46.40 points or 0.18%. Sensex ended the day, down by 176.43 points or 0.21%.

Top gainers & losers

Top 3 gainers at Nifty 50 today were Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finance and Coal India. Top 3 losers were HCL Tech, Hindalco and Tata Steel.  Hindalco’s stock lost because of higher tariff announcement by President Trump on copper.

Some small cap stocks gained today

Among broad market indices, Nifty Smallcap 50 index was the top gainer today. It ended the day, up by 0.60%. Top losers were Nifty 100 and Nifty 200 indices. They ended the day, down by 0.16%.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Realty Index was the top loser. It ended the day, down by 1.49%. Realty stocks have been seeing selling pressure since reports of slowdown in home sales in June quarter came.  Metal index ended the day down by 1.40%. Vedanta, a constituent of Nifty Metal index declined by 3.29% today. Another Vedanta group company Hindustan Zinc lost more than 2.50% today. This after a US based research firm said that Vedanta Group’s financial statements have material discrepancies. Hindustan Copper’s stock declined by 3.36% today. This after US President Trump said that US will impose 50% tariff on copper imports.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty FMCG index was the top gainer today. It closed the day, up by 0.80%.

Market breadth turned marginally positive today. At NSE 1477 stocks gained during the day. 1455 stocks declined.
