Mumbai, July 22: Indian benchmark indices fell on Wednesday as a sharp rise in crude oil prices amid escalating tensions in the Middle East weighed on investor sentiment and raised concerns over inflation, the trade deficit and corporate profitability. Pharmaceutical stocks came under additional pressure after the U.S. outlined a phased tariff plan for imported generic medicines.

The rise in crude prices is a key concern for India, one of the world’s largest oil importers. Higher energy costs could fuel domestic inflation, widen the country’s trade deficit and squeeze corporate margins, particularly for sectors with high fuel and transportation costs. The escalation in geopolitical tensions also kept investors cautious despite positive earnings announcements from select companies.

Pharma Stocks Under Pressure

Pharmaceutical stocks were among the biggest casualties of the day’s selloff after U.S. President Donald Trump outlined a phased tariff plan targeting imported generic medicines.

The Nifty Pharma index fell 1.3% as investors assessed the potential impact of the proposed duties on Indian drugmakers, which have significant exposure to the U.S. market. The sector’s decline added to broader market pressure, with investors concerned about the potential impact on margins and export competitiveness. Lupin fell the most going down 4.3%, followed by Piramal Pharma 4.2%. Other decliners included Aurobindo Pharma (2.92%) and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (1.92%).

Financial Stocks Weigh On Benchmarks

Financial stocks also contributed to the market decline, with investors continuing to reassess earnings and profitability trends across the banking sector.

Bandhan Bank plunged 17% after the lender lowered its return-on-assets outlook for the financial year, citing expectations of narrower net interest margins and higher operating expenses. The sharp fall came despite the bank reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly profit, highlighting the market’s focus on forward-looking guidance over headline earnings growth.

The weakness in banks came as investors remained concerned about margin pressures, funding costs and the outlook for profitability amid an increasingly competitive deposit environment.

Auto Stocks Buck Broader Trend

Auto stocks emerged as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise weak market, with Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor gaining 5.7% and 3.3%, respectively, after the companies reported growth in quarterly profit.

The gains reflected investor optimism over stronger earnings and demand trends, with positive results providing a stock-specific boost despite the broader risk-off environment. The performance of auto stocks also highlighted the divergence in market sentiment, with companies delivering strong quarterly numbers continuing to attract buying interest.

Investors are likely to remain focused on the ongoing earnings season for further clues on demand, margins and the ability of companies to navigate elevated input and energy costs.

IT Heavyweights Add To Market Pressure

Information technology stocks also came under pressure, with the Nifty IT index falling 1.5%, adding to the drag on the benchmark indices. Heavyweights including Infosys, TCS, HCLTech and Wipro were among the stocks weighing on sentiment as investors remained cautious about the outlook for global technology spending and demand.

The weakness in IT stocks came amid broader risk-off sentiment across global markets, with investors also assessing the impact of elevated crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty on the global economic outlook. As major Indian IT companies derive a significant share of their revenue from overseas markets, concerns over economic growth and discretionary technology spending remain key factors influencing the sector.

The decline in heavyweight IT stocks compounded pressure from financial and pharmaceutical counters, leaving the broader market firmly in negative territory.

FMCG Stocks Buck Trend, Nestle India Rises After Earnings

FMCG stocks bucked the broader market weakness, with the Nifty FMCG index rising 0.7%, supported by a 2.9% jump in Nestle India following its quarterly earnings. The stock emerged among the notable gainers on the Nifty, helping the consumer goods index outperform as investors sought relative safety in defensive sectors amid heightened volatility.

The gains in FMCG stocks provided some respite to the broader market, with investors favouring companies with relatively stable domestic demand as concerns over rising crude prices, geopolitical tensions and global economic uncertainty weighed on risk appetite. Nestle India was among the key sectoral outperformers after its earnings, while the broader FMCG space remained resilient despite the market-wide selloff.

The sector’s defensive characteristics also helped it stand out against weakness across IT, pharma, banking and other cyclical segments. With crude prices rising and geopolitical risks intensifying, FMCG stocks could continue to attract investor interest as markets look for companies with relatively predictable earnings and limited exposure to global trade disruptions.

Mid-, Small-Caps Also Under Pressure

The selloff extended to the broader market, with the Nifty Smallcap index declining 1.5% and the Nifty Midcap index falling 1.1%. The broader weakness indicated that risk aversion was not limited to large-cap stocks as investors responded to the worsening geopolitical backdrop and rising crude prices.

Fourteen of the 16 major sectoral indices traded lower, underscoring the breadth of the selling pressure. The combination of higher oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and fresh concerns over U.S. trade policy created a challenging environment for equities.

Crude, Geopolitics To Drive Market Direction

The outlook for Indian equities is likely to remain closely tied to developments in the Middle East and movements in crude oil prices. Two oil tankers carrying Saudi crude to Asia reversed course in the Red Sea, while another tanker was hit in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the growing risks to key energy transit routes.

For India, any prolonged disruption to oil supplies could intensify macroeconomic pressures and weigh on corporate earnings. At the same time, the earnings season is expected to generate stock-specific moves, with strong results potentially offering some support even as broader sentiment remains fragile.

With crude prices elevated and geopolitical risks mounting, investors are likely to remain cautious, while tracking the rupee, foreign fund flows and developments around U.S. tariffs for further directional cues.
