Mumbai, 27 October 2026: US equities closed broadly higher on Monday, 26 October 2026, as Anthropic’s public IPO filing revived interest in artificial intelligence shares and a retreat in crude oil prices eased pressure on the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 146.42 points, or 0.28%, the S&P 500 rose 0.70%, and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 0.82%, with semiconductor and consumer discretionary shares leading the advance.
Dow Jones Gains 146 Points as AI Filing Lifts Blue-Chip Shares Today
The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened at 52,320.45 and closed at 52,361.58, gaining 146.42 points, or 0.28%. The index touched an intraday high of 52,620.19 and a low of 52,263.25 during the session. The advance was supported by strong moves in several index constituents, with Lockheed Martin rising 5.26%, RTX adding 3.37%, and Goldman Sachs gaining 2.00%.
On the downside, Merck fell 3.21%, UnitedHealth slipped 1.80%, and Verizon dropped 3.48% following its quarterly revenue miss. The blue-chip benchmark’s gain came as Anthropic’s IPO prospectus revived appetite for AI-linked shares, while a pullback in Brent crude from near six-month highs provided additional support to equity markets.
The session followed a difficult stretch for technology and AI-linked stocks, with the Dow now having ended higher in three of the past four sessions.

The S&P 500 opened at 7,639.70 and ended at 7,676.77, gaining 53.09 points, or 0.70%. During the session, the index reached a high of 7,702.13 and a low of 7,639.70. Breadth was positive for much of the session, with 332 advancers in the S&P 500 shortly before 11:00 Eastern Time and nine of 11 sectors in the index higher at that point.

AI IPO Filing and Oil Retreat Drive Broader Session Market Direction Today
The principal market catalyst was Anthropic’s public IPO filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which disclosed $16.29 billion in revenue for the six months ended June and plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker “ANT.” The filing revived enthusiasm for AI-linked shares after several weeks of concerns about the sustainability of data-centre spending.
Treasury yields moved lower, while Brent crude fell 1.8% to $114.57 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate slid more than 2% to $100.60 per barrel, easing inflation concerns. These developments coincided with the day’s gains across the major US equity benchmarks.
A second catalyst was Meta Platforms’ announcement that it intends to raise up to $95 billion through stock offerings to fund its AI investments. SpaceX also said over the weekend that it had closed a $40 billion debt deal for AI chips. Trading remained focused on the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision, with fed funds futures indicating a 90% likelihood that policymakers would hold rates at the current target range of 3.75% to 4%.
Movements across semiconductor, technology, and consumer discretionary sectors reflected the day’s broader market conditions, while the communication services and energy groups lagged.
VIX Falls 6.1% as Volatility Expectations Ease Across Major US Indices Today
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) changed -6.1% to 18.27, compared with its previous close of 19.45. The index measures expected volatility in the S&P 500 over the coming 30 days. Its movement during the session coincided with the broad equity rally and falling oil prices.
The VIX remained above its 200-day moving average of 18.20, marking a third straight close above that level. The CBOE Nasdaq Volatility Index (VXN) and the CBOE S&P 500 3-Month Volatility Index (VIX3M) also reflected the day’s overall decline in volatility expectations. The measure’s retreat came as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite recovered from back-to-back weekly losses.
Technology Sector Gains 1.4% as Communication Services Falls 0.6% in Session Today
Performance across the 11 S&P 500 sectors was broadly higher, with nine groups advancing and two declining shortly before midday. Information Technology recorded the strongest move at 1.4%, followed by Consumer Discretionary at 1.7%. Communication Services declined 0.6%, while Energy slipped 0.1% as crude oil prices retreated.
The remaining sectors recorded mixed moves during the session, with financials and industrials contributing to the broader advance. The sector movements followed Anthropic’s IPO filing and the pullback in oil prices, while the communication services group touched its lowest level since June 2025 during the session.

Chicago Fed National Index Hits 0.07 as Growth Activity Improves Slightly Today
The latest economic data showed the Chicago Fed National Activity Index at +0.07 in September, compared with -0.08 in August. The index’s three-month moving average, CFNAI-MA3, increased to +0.03 from +0.01 in the prior month. The release provided the latest information on national economic activity during the session, suggesting a modest improvement in growth conditions.
No other major economic indicators were released on the day, leaving investors focused on the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision and the busy corporate earnings calendar. The September Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation report and third-quarter gross domestic product figures were scheduled for later in the week.
Federal Reserve Holds Rate Focus as 10-Year Yield Stays Below 5% Today
The Federal Reserve remained a key focus as markets assessed the likelihood of a rate pause at the conclusion of its two-day meeting on 28 October. Fed funds futures priced a 90% probability that policymakers would hold rates at the current target range of 3.75% to 4%, following September’s 25-basis-point increase.
The 10-year Treasury yield held below 5.00% and was down less than one basis point during the session. The yield curve changed as shorter-dated yields remained elevated while longer-dated yields drifted lower. The 2-year, 5-year, and 30-year Treasury yields also reflected the session’s rate expectations, with the bond market having already tightened credit conditions since the Fed’s last meeting.
Brent Crude Falls 1.8% as Oil Retreat Supports Broader Equity Markets Today
Brent crude traded at $114.57, changing -1.8%, while WTI crude stood at $100.60, moving -2%. The retreat came after crude prices had surged to near six-month highs late last week, with Brent finishing the prior week up 6% and WTI ending 2.3% higher. The pullback followed a visit by Saudi Arabia’s defence minister to Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials aimed at lowering regional tensions.
Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities over the weekend had kept supply concerns in focus, and Saudi Arabia said on Sunday it had intercepted more missiles and drones. The top oil exporter restarted partial operations at its main airport on Sunday after damage in a previous round of attacks.
Despite the session’s decline, Brent remained near its highest level since late April, and gasoline prices stayed above $4 per gallon, with the national average at $4.28 per gallon, down $0.20 from a month ago but up $1.23 from a year earlier. Diesel prices stood at $5.34 per gallon, roughly $3.28 more than a year ago.
The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve stood at 282.6 million barrels last week, the lowest level since 1982, as stocks were drawn down to ease the supply disruption in the Middle East. Global inventories have fallen sharply in the eight months since the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February.
Oil prices have risen about 12% this month as investors fear fighting will sharply escalate in the region and disrupt oil supplies at a time when the world’s buffers have been exhausted. Gold traded at $4,025 an ounce, changing 0.4%, while silver moved -0.7% to $53.585.
Copper changed 0.3% to $6.5250, and natural gas moved -1% to $2.602 per million British thermal units. Precious metals firmed on a softer dollar and stable Treasury yields, while natural gas futures trimmed earlier losses and briefly turned positive during volatile trading ahead of contract expiration later in the week.

Dollar Index Moves 0.1% Higher as Treasury Yields Stay Below 5% Today
The US Dollar Index (DXY) moved 0.1% higher to 101.96. EUR/USD stood at 1.122, USD/JPY traded at 156.92, and GBP/USD was at 1.3385. Currency movements followed falling oil prices and lower Treasury yields, which weighed on the greenback ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy decision and a busy week of central bank meetings globally. The dollar’s modest advance came as the 10-year Treasury yield held below 5.00% and Brent crude retreated from near six-month highs.
The 2-year US Treasury yield stood at 4.699%, while the 5-year yield was 4.820%. The 30-year yield was 5.298%. The yield curve steepened as shorter-dated yields remained elevated while longer-dated yields drifted lower. The bond market had already tightened credit conditions since the Fed’s last meeting, and investors were balancing rate expectations against persistent inflation risks and geopolitical tensions.
Several other global central banks, including the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada, and the Bank of Japan, were also scheduled to hold policy-setting meetings this week, adding to the focus on currency markets.
The dollar’s slight gain came despite the pullback in oil prices, as traders assessed the likelihood of a hawkish pause from the Federal Reserve following hotter-than-expected inflation data. The US Dollar Index had earlier traded at 101.96, up 0.1%, while the euro and pound posted mixed moves against the greenback. Currency markets also reflected the session’s broader risk-on tone, with equity gains and lower volatility expectations influencing flows.
