Mumbai, April 2: National Stock Exchange indices posted a mixed close on volatile trading Thursday, with large-caps flattening out losses as the smaller end of the market continued to bleed and sectors cheering for divergent economic tailwinds.

Nifty IT

Among sectoral indices, Nifty IT ended Thursday’s session as the biggest winner across broad-market categories, soaring 2.60% to 30,441.45, while taking advantage of its dollar-revenue strengths on a day when the rupee rose and investors continued to view technology stocks favourably. Congruently, Nifty Midsmall IT & Telecom jumped 2.09% while Nifty Realty rose 1.07% to 672.10. Nifty Consumer Durables closed down 0.93% at 33,345.00, the biggest sectoral loser on Thursday.

Nifty Pharma ended lower by 0.92% at 21,808.40. Nifty Healthcare Index declined 0.86% to 13,934.35. Nifty Chemicals dipped 0.81%. Crude prices continued to tumble through much of Thursday’s session as geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the war in Iran remained elevated, dragging down Nifty Oil & Gas 0.79% to 10,842.35. Nifty PSU Bank ended down 0.37% at 8,134.40 while Nifty Private Bank inched higher by 0.39%.

Among derivatives-eligible indices, Nifty Financial Services gained 0.25% to 24,041.55 and Nifty Bank rose 0.19% to end at 51,548.75. Trump Speaks After Prolonged Silence; Market Highly Volatile on News

Thursday volatility stemmed from one central development. US President Donald Trump finally broke his silence on the Iran war via an evening speech on Thursday. Trump renewed his threats to Iran but stated that there would be no need for US citizens to use gas masks. He also gave a timeline for when the Iran war will likely end. US markets were highly volatile through much of the session on news of Trump’s speech. Strait of Hormuz has been closed off to oil shipments since Iran began its war on the US and countries across the Middle East continue to face supply shortage fears as Thursday progressed.
