Mumbai, August 18: Petrol and diesel prices today remained mixed across major Indian cities and state capitals, with Hyderabad witnessing the sharpest increase in petrol prices, while Chandigarh recorded the biggest decline in both petrol and diesel rates. Petrol prices rose by Rs 6 per litre in Hyderabad to Rs 115.69, while diesel prices in the city increased by Rs 0.83 to Rs 103.82. On the other hand, petrol in Chandigarh fell Rs 4.39 to Rs 101.54 per litre, while diesel prices plunged Rs 6.35 to Rs 89.47. In New Delhi, petrol remained unchanged at Rs 102.12 per litre and diesel at Rs 95.20.

Crude oil prices extended their gains on Tuesday as hopes of a lasting US-Iran peace deal faded, raising concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies.

Brent crude futures rose 0.5% to $91.3 a barrel, after touching their highest level since July 30 on Monday, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 0.7% to $85.1 a barrel.

WTI had earlier climbed to $85.37 on Monday, its highest level since July 31.

The latest gains came after the US ruled out extending a temporary ceasefire with Iran, while Tehran said it would adopt a more aggressive military posture after efforts to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict stalled. The lack of progress towards peace has also raised concerns over the resumption of tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments.

Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has already slowed sharply following attacks on tankers. Kpler data showed that only five commodity vessels crossed the strait on Saturday, with none recorded on Sunday, compared with 31 vessels during the previous weekend. Additional attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea have further intensified concerns over disruptions at key shipping routes.

The supply risks are particularly significant for global markets because the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb remain critical energy transit routes. While Iran is separately negotiating with Oman over an arrangement to manage the Strait of Hormuz, uncertainty over the broader conflict continues to keep a risk premium embedded in crude prices.

For India, the sustained rise in crude oil prices remains a key concern given the country’s dependence on imported energy. Brent crude above $90 a barrel could increase pressure on the import bill and the rupee, while also raising inflation risks and squeezing margins for fuel-consuming industries.

Meanwhile, a preliminary Reuters poll showed that US crude oil inventories were expected to have declined last week, alongside product inventories. Any further drawdown in stockpiles could provide additional support to prices at a time when geopolitical risks are already tightening the supply outlook.

The near-term direction of crude is therefore likely to remain closely tied to developments in the Middle East, particularly any progress towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reviving US-Iran negotiations. For Indian equities, persistently elevated oil prices could remain a headwind for sentiment and keep oil-sensitive sectors in focus.
