Mumbai, July 17: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across India’s major metro cities on Friday, with New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata seeing little to no movement. However, fuel rates witnessed notable revisions in several state capitals, led by sharp increases in Chennai and Hyderabad, while Patna, Lucknow and Noida recorded price cuts. Hyderabad continued to have the highest petrol and diesel prices among the major cities tracked, while Delhi’s fuel rates remained unchanged at ₹102.12 per litre for petrol and ₹95.20 per litre for diesel.
Crude oil prices climbed on Friday and were set for their strongest weekly gains in months as escalating military hostilities between the United States and Iran heightened concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies. Fears that the conflict could spread beyond the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea added a fresh geopolitical risk premium to the market.
Brent crude futures rose 0.9% to almost $85 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 1% to $79.8 a barrel during Asian trading hours. The gains put both benchmarks on track for weekly advances of nearly 12%.
The latest rally follows a sharp escalation in the conflict after the United States intensified strikes across the Gulf, while Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military facilities and allies in the region. The renewed hostilities have disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints through which roughly a fifth of global oil supplies normally pass.
Investor concerns deepened after reports that Tehran had asked Yemen’s Houthi movement to prepare to shut the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—the gateway to the Red Sea—if U.S. attacks on Iranian infrastructure continue. A disruption at both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb would significantly affect global crude shipments, tighten tanker availability and drive up freight and insurance costs, analysts said.
The prospect of simultaneous disruptions to two of the world’s most important oil transit routes has prompted traders to build a larger geopolitical premium into crude prices. The International Energy Agency has also warned that a prolonged escalation could have significant implications for global energy markets.
