Sensex, Nifty Today: Adani, Hindalco Rally but Banking & Energy Stocks Drag Market Sentiment

Mumbai, April 16: Indian markets opened strong on Thursday and witnessed buying interest across the board in early trade with Adani Enterprises, Hindalco, Trent, Eternal, Adani Ports, BEL and Larsen & Toubro surging before cooling off later in the session amid profit booking.
Adani Enterprises traded between a high of ₹2,210.40 and a low of ₹2,161.10 in morning trade. The stock picked up from its previous close of ₹2,144.40 and moved up 3.06% to ₹2,210 on the BSE on Thursday, signalling buying interest in the Adani pack.
Hindalco Industries also witnessed strong traction as it traded between ₹1,048.70 and ₹1,013. Moving up from its previous close of ₹1,011.45, the stock further rose 2.85% to ₹1,040.25 on persistent buying interest in metal stocks.
Trent was among the top gainers as it moved between ₹4,095.30 and ₹3,945.10. The stock advanced 2.77% from its previous closing of ₹3,978.20 to end at ₹4,088.40 on the BSE on Thursday, tracking positive movement in retail-focused stocks.
Eternal (Zomato) traded between ₹253.29 and ₹247.15 during the session. It moved up 2.53% from ₹246.67 in the previous session to ₹252.91 on continued buying interest in digital consumption stocks.
Adani Ports also surged during the session as it moved between ₹1,555.80 and ₹1,510. Rising from its previous close of ₹1,511.80, it further gained 2.2% to close at ₹1,545 on improved investor sentiment around infrastructure and logistics stocks.
BEL (Bharat Electronics) joined the gainers’ list, trading between ₹457 and ₹448.90. The stock climbed 2.02% from its previous close of ₹447.65 to ₹456.70, tracking positive moves in defence stocks.
Larsen & Toubro also witnessed buying interest as it traded between ₹4,149 and ₹4,089. It moved up from its previous closing of ₹4,076.30 to ₹4,117 on the BSE on Thursday, tracking positive moves in capital goods stocks.
On the flip side, HDFC Bank was the steepest loser, trading between ₹820.05 and ₹792.20. The stock slipped 1.96% from its previous close of ₹809.90 to ₹794 on the BSE, signalling weak momentum in the banking pack.
ONGC also slipped during the session, oscillating between ₹288.10 and ₹282. Moving down from ₹287.60, the stock further declined 1.65% to ₹282.85 as energy stocks traded weak even as crude prices eased further.
HDFC Life Insurance was also among the losers as it traded between ₹650.75 and ₹627.70. It fell 1.55% from ₹640.45 to ₹630.50 on weak trades, hinting at losses in financial services stocks.
Titan Company traded lower, hitting a high of ₹4,554 and a low of ₹4,440. It slipped 1.33% from ₹4,522.20 to ₹4,462 amid profit booking in consumer stocks.
Mahindra & Mahindra slipped between ₹3,288 and ₹3,201. It dipped 1.12% from ₹3,256.50 to ₹3,220 as auto stocks traded with weak sentiment.
The Sensex tanked 122.56 points or 0.16% to close at 77,988.68 while the Nifty fell 34.55 points or 0.14% to close at 24,196.75 after enjoying big gains in early trade.
