New Delhi, Sept 18: Silver rates in India broke out of their three-session lull on Friday, with the two-tier city structure that had held in place since Tuesday now flipping outright. Seven cities, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad, jumped to ₹2,500 per 10 grams, ₹25,000 per 100 grams and ₹2,50,000 per kilogram, up sharply from Thursday’s ₹2,450, ₹24,500 and ₹2,45,000 respectively, a gain of ₹50 per 10 grams, or 2.04 per cent. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala, which had carried the premium rate through the flat stretch, instead slipped marginally to ₹2,499 per 10 grams, ₹24,990 per 100 grams and ₹2,49,900 per kilogram, down ₹1 from Thursday’s ₹2,500, a fall of 0.04 per cent.

The move effectively inverts the city-level pattern that had held since Tuesday, when Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala commanded a ₹50 premium over the remaining seven cities. On Friday, the seven-city group closed that gap entirely and edged one rupee above the erstwhile premium cities, which slipped fractionally instead of holding firm. Dealers said the shift followed three unusually quiet sessions through Wednesday and Thursday, during which global silver prices traded in a tight range, and reflects a broader upward pull in the metal reasserting itself after the pause. The scale of the move, a ₹50 jump in a single session after three days of no movement at all, marks one of the sharper one-day swings in the recent stretch and suggests dealers across the seven-city group had been holding rates artificially flat rather than tracking the metal tick for tick.

It is unusual for a majority of tracked cities to move in one direction while a minority moves in the other on the same day, dealers said, and the shift bears watching over the weekend to see whether the seven-city group’s new ₹2,500 level holds or whether Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala’s slight softness spreads more broadly once markets reopen after Friday’s close.

Silver price in India today stands at ₹250 per gram and ₹2,50,000 per kilogram at the national base rate, according to Goodreturns.in, which tracks daily dealer-forum rates across major cities. Silver price in India largely follows international trends since local demand and supply here are too thin to move prices meaningfully on their own. Global spot silver firmed overnight, dealers said, coinciding with the wider rally across metals and commodities markets, and pushing city rates higher after a stretch of essentially unchanged pricing that had persisted since Tuesday.

Retail buyers have continued to use silver purchases as an entry point into precious metals, helped by its far lower per-gram price compared with gold. With Navratri still weeks away and Diwali further out, jewellers said footfall for silver coins, idols and small gift items remained steady through the recent flat stretch, and Friday’s sharper move higher could nudge some buyers to bring forward purchases ahead of the festive season rather than wait for prices to climb further. A single-session move of this size, even at roughly two per cent, is large enough to influence near-term buying behaviour among retail investors who track daily rates closely, jewellers added, particularly those planning bulk purchases of coins and bars for gifting later in the year.

India fetches daily nationwide silver rates from designated dealer forums in each city, compiled and published here each morning. These rates are subject to change by the time buyers reach a jewellery or bullion dealer later in the day, so confirming the price with the jeweller before a purchase remains advisable, particularly on a day when rates have moved as sharply as they have today.

On Friday, silver rates stand at ₹2,50,000 per kilogram in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad, marginally above ₹2,49,900 in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala, a reversal from Thursday when the latter three cities held the higher rate. Silver jewellery and ornaments typically cost more than the per-gram rates shown here due to making charges, plus a 3 per cent GST levied on metallic silver.

Historically, silver always trades for less than gold on a per gram basis. Investors looking to gain silver exposure without buying the physical metal could check out Silver ETFs in India, which track the metal’s price without requiring storage or purity checks.

Silver articles and jewellery typically contain other metals like copper, which let retailers mark up prices at the jewellery store. That is why investors buying metallic silver should focus on bars and coins instead of jewellery. Pure silver is 999 fine.

Jewellery Stocks Today

Jewellery stocks were mixed on Friday morning, a reversal from Thursday’s uniformly lower session when all four tracked counters ended in the red. Silgo Retail led the gainers, up 1.17 per cent, followed by PN Gadgil Jewellers, up 0.27 per cent, while Vaibhav Global led the decliners, down 0.72 per cent, and Senco Gold slipped 0.23 per cent. Trading was still underway at the time of writing.

Senco Gold  SENCO  ₹345.60  -₹0.80 (-0.23%)
PN Gadgil Jewellers  PNGJL  ₹602.75  +₹1.60 (+0.27%)
Silgo Retail  SILGO  ₹71.00  +₹0.82 (+1.17%)
Vaibhav Global  VAIBHAVGBL  ₹209.82  -₹1.53 (-0.72%)

Senco Gold opened at ₹348.95, touched an early high of ₹351.00, then slid to a low of ₹342.90 before a partial recovery through the rest of the morning to settle around ₹345.60, still below Thursday’s close. PN Gadgil Jewellers opened sharply higher at ₹606.90, edged up to a high of ₹606.95, then reversed to a low of ₹596.85 before clawing back to ₹602.75, enough to hold a marginal gain for the session. Silgo Retail opened lower at ₹69.46, below Thursday’s close, then rallied through the morning to a high of ₹71.39 before easing slightly to settle at ₹71.00, the strongest performer of the four in percentage terms. Vaibhav Global opened higher at ₹212.35, rose to a high of ₹213.00 within the first hour, then slid through the rest of the morning to a low of ₹209.52, recovering only marginally to ₹209.82 and ending the only counter unable to claw back into positive territory.

Market watchers said Friday’s mixed session, with two counters higher and two lower, marks a break from Thursday’s uniform decline and points to stock-specific rotation rather than a sector-wide move. Senco Gold and PN Gadgil Jewellers both followed a similar arc, opening higher, slipping to the day’s low by midmorning, then partially recovering, while Silgo Retail’s rally from a weak open stood out as the session’s clearest reversal. Vaibhav Global was the exception, unable to hold its early gains despite an equally strong start, leaving it as the sole counter still in the red by the time of writing.
